Peace Tree Day Celebrations at Delmanor Wynford

Peace Tree Day was first proclaimed in Toronto by former Mayor David Miller on June 1, 2006. It is an event celebrated annually in the City of Toronto. Mayor Rob Ford continued the tradition this year and proclaimed June 1st as Peace Tree Day. It is an opportunity to inspire children and youth to share and celebrate peace and diversity through the arts. In the past, Peace Tree Day celebrations have been held at City Hall downtown and at Mel Lastman Square with students across the Greater Toronto Area and Ontario.

This year, for the first time, the Toronto Peace Tree Ambassadors wanted to share their peace and diversity workshops with seniors and their grandchildren. Approximately 15 children between the ages of 8-10 arrived at Delmanor Wynford on June 1st and conducted a number of wonderful peace and diversity workshops including ‘Bollywood/Flamenco’ dance, Chinese Brush Painting, Yoga, Aboriginal Dot Painting and Cultural Trivia.

Residents and staff at Delmanor Wynford were inspired by the outstanding workshops and were extremely impressed with the children. The residents had the opportunity to interact with the children and learn about diversity. It was truly inspiring to be able to have so many different cultures come together and learn about each other in a peaceful environment.

The residents and staff were honoured to have the children (Peace Tree Day Ambassadors) celebrate Peace Tree Day at Delmanor Wynford. The celebration ended with all participants having a better understanding of different cultures and realizing that coming together and learning about each other will build a stronger community for everyone.
