The Elgin Mills Spring Fling Dance Was More Than Just a Party!

With the lovely smell of spring air and the warm weather of the season beginning to show her beautiful face, happiness and joy of springs arrival was celebrated in more ways than one at Delmanor Elgin Mills.

While residents and staff celebrated with dancing and music, they were also contributing to a very successful fundraising venture that was held in conjunction with the Spring Fling Dance.

With an expanded mandate from the province to build a new hospital in Vaughan and grow health care services across the community, the Mackenzie Health Hospital is being re branded to communicate the significant change and enhanced level of health care that will be developed for all of the Southwest York region

The 10 year vision for the new hospital in Vaughan
Mackenzie Health's expanded mandate requires significant physical changes to support increased capacity and services to meet the growing health care needs of the community.  The building of the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital and the continued revitalization of Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital are examples of areas of focus requiring significant fundraising.

Delmanor Elgin Mills was proud to contribute to this very worthwhile venture, as health care affects everyone one of us.  The retirement community will continue to support the efforts of Mackenzie Health Hospital's fundraising efforts.

The Spring Fling Dance was a wonderful success!  The dance floor was filled with residents kicking up their heels to the fantastic music provided by 5th Avenue.

Spring Fling Dance at Delmanor Elgin Mills!

Delmanor Elgin Mills staff sprang into teamwork with the inaugural Spring Fling Dance.

The Delmanor Elgin Mills Team

Spring was in the air as Delmanor Elgin Mills hosted its first Spring Fling Dance. It took the full team at Delmanor Elgin Mills in order to put on such a successful event that had everyone up dancing, singing and laughing.

The lobby was transformed into a dance hall with lanterns that adorned the area with their warm ambiance. There was a happy up-beat feeling with all of the guests, residents and staff who all had a fantastic time! The dance music was provided by 5th Avenue who did a wonderful job setting the mood and providing excellent music for everyone to dance to.

What truly separates Delmanor and their ability to put on such successful events is that they are taken on by the entire team and not just one individual. Many Elgin Mills staff members came back after a long day of work so that they could spend the evening dancing with residents. Spouses of staff drove long distances so that they could be a part of this great evening as well.  Not to mention Delmanor Elgin Mills GM, Louis Franco, who moved and grooved on the dance floor. When you have an entire team that is this dedicated to their jobs and to the residents, it is something that is not only seen, but felt.

The room was electric with the energy and everyone in attendance truly did raise the roof! Everyone left that evening hot, exhausted but most of all feeling invigorated and vibrant and ready for the next dance.  The evening was truly a great success in every way!

Mysterion - The Mind Reader - Astounds Delmanor Northtown Audience

Mentalist, Magician and Mind Reader Mysterion amazed residents, family members, and guests of Delmanor Northtown Seniors Communities with his exciting and memorizing show.

Mysterion has been invited to demonstrate some of his feature act performances on many television stations such as Global TV, City TV and the Discovery Channel, to name a few. He has been invited to speak on numerous radio programs and gives performances around the world, along with being a hit with many Fortune 500 companies.

Among his vast catalogue of wonderful reviews, Mysterion has received glowing commendations in local media outlets such as the Toronto Sun and Toronto Star.

With a self proclaimed PhD in ESP, Mysterion's love for entertaining started back when he watched the Amazing Kreskin on television as a child.  This early influence led to a lifetime passion of magic and delight of entertaining others.

Mysterion's showcase of magic borders on the impossible.  The residents watched in wonder as he bent and contorted spoons, read minds and performed magic tricks of wonder while blindfolded.

After the show, some of the Delmanor Northtown skeptics and audience were left wondering just how he managed to accomplish such seemingly impossible illusions.  The audience responded with claps and cheers as they marveled after his wondrous show.

The Tropics Come to Delmanor Glen Abbey

Despite the late spring weather, the Siony Srnka Hula Dancers paid a visit to Delmanor Glen Abbey to heat things up with their interactive hula dance show.

Siony's Dance Company has been preserving and sharing Hawaiian and Tahitian culture since 1978.  Siony R. Srnka set up her dance school in the GTA to share her love of dance with as many people as possible.

Siony began her dance career at home in the Philippines.  After immigrating to Toronto in 1973, she continued her dance teaching career and opened Siony's Dance Company.  With great success and high demand for her live performances, she branched her school into a live show dance performance group that performs frequently on both sides of the border along with international audiences from her television network performances.

In recognition of the contributions made by Siony's Dance Company to Canadian multiculturalism, Siony was inducted into the top 100 most outstanding Philippino Canadians during a gala event at Queen's Park in 1999.

The Delmanor Glen Abbey seniors loved the performance from Siony's dancers and felt the contagious energy and tropical vibe.

Fitness Makes the Difference at Delmanor Northtown

Many residents at Delmanor Northtown have taken part in the unique exercise program named Flexercise that is offered at the retirement community.  Flexercise energizes the body and jump starts the residents' day by combining movement and flow.

Flexercise classes focus on a circulatory warm up, followed by muscle conditioning using thera-bands and light hand held weights.  Each class is ended with stretching in order to provide a cool down period and to promote flexibility.

The Delmanor Northtown seniors really enjoy the way they feel after participating in their Flexercise class and many comment on the benefits they feel later in the day or even many days after a class.

The convenience and variety that is incorporated into the classes along with the availability of suitable equipment and wonderful support by trained and encouraging staff all help to motivate the residents to participate in the customized fitness routine.

Residents really feel the difference that the Delmanor LivingWell program makes and what an excellent way to welcome the spring season!

Painting & Pottery at Delmanor Northtown

Delmanor Northtown welcomed a pottery and painting art session where residents were given the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and take part in a hands-on learning experience.

More and more seniors are discovering the rewards of finding a new hobby or rediscovering a pleasurable pastime from their past.  Many crafts are suitable for a wide range of abilities; seniors can choose the ones they find most comfortable or best suited to their skill and experience level.

Projects that involve working with clay are an excellent choice for seniors who suffer from limited dexterity in their fingers and hands.  Many seniors find that as they work to soften the clay, they also exercise their hands and fingers, while creating interesting objects.

The Northtown residents were working on their brush and painting techniques in the relaxing environment of home, while creating great gifts and keepsakes to treasure.  The session was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who participated since it was geared to every craft level, from beginners to the more advanced.

Let's Go Blue Jays!

The Rogers Centre was not the only place rockin’ in anticipation of the Toronto Blue Jays Home Opener, Delmanor Wynford residents and staff members were dressed in blue from head to toe! Residents wore jerseys, vests, hats, and jewellery in support of our very own Toronto Blue Jays.
Wynford residents Don & Joyce ready for the game

The party started with a special lunch which mirrored menu items available at the Rogers Centre including Blue Jays Soup, Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, French Fries, and Cookies n’ Cream Ice Cream with blue whipped cream and sprinkles. Following lunch, residents enjoyed first class entertainment with former Blue Jays musician Mark Kersey (Mark was the organist with the Toronto Blue Jays for three years). Mark played guitar and accordion as he sang a variety of high-energy tunes and baseball favourites while residents enjoyed peanuts in the shell! Mark had the entire crowd energized and looking forward to the game.

Jo & Bev looking fabulous in blue!

The party continued while residents settled in to watch the first game of the season on the big screen against the Cleveland Indians. Residents could be heard cheering throughout the building! Although the Toronto Blue Jays were not able to come away with the win, the residents at Delmanor Wynford had a fantastic time and are looking forward to the next game! It was wonderful to see everyone come together to support our home town Toronto Blue Jays and it was obvious that the residents truly enjoyed the sense of community that was felt cheering for the Jays!

Steps to LivingWell

Put a spring in your step! If you detect a whiff of spring in the air, now is the ideal time to make the most of it.  Health experts say taking daily breaks in the fresh air can help us relax, but can also offer a whole range of health benefits. From boosting your fitness levels to fighting cancer, the great outdoors is an effective, alternative medicine.
You can help alleviate stress by breathing your way to good health through the simple practice of yogic breathing. Among other things, breathing loads your blood with oxygen, which maintains your health at the most desirable level. Shallow breathing doesn't oxygenate your blood very efficiently. As a result, toxins can build up in your  body’s cells. Before you know it, you feel sluggish and down, and eventually organs begin to malfunction. Is it any wonder that conscious breathing is the best tool you have to profoundly affect your body and mind?

Try the following exercise (outdoors ideally, weather permitting):

1. Sit comfortably in a chair.

2. Close your eyes and visualize a peacefully scene.

3. Inhale and exhale slowly and deeply through your nose.

4. Lengthen your breath for 20 rounds (breaths).

5. Continue breathing like this with your eyes closed and notice the difference in how you feel overall.

Breath work is a type of breathing practice that leads you to inner peace, expands your awareness and helps you create connection with your body. Breathe for the health of it!

Brought to you by your LivingWell coaches.
