Delmanor Northtown Drivewise

Delmanor Northtown was driving wise on September 14th when 60 participants including residents, staff and senior drivers from the community decided to sharpen up their driving skills in the interest of promoting safe and enjoyable trips on our roadways.

Recently retired OPP Sergeant Bob Patterson brought 17 years of experience on the police force and 15 years as a paramedic to develop the drivewise program for seniors. This very beneficial and popular seminar highlighted the consideration and devotion to safety that the Northtown seniors possess. Some of the important facts that were mentioned by Mr. Patterson and the trustee of Ward 5, Mr. James Pastemek were;
1) There are approximately 8.1 licensed drivers in Ontario
2) Approximately 1.9 million of Ontario 's licenses drivers (or about 23% of all drivers are 55 years or older)

3) In 2000, there were 443,000 drivers involved in collisions, of those 63,000 of 14% were seniors
4) The percentage of drivers involved in collissions in the 55 and over age categories is lower than any other age group

Delmanor Northtown was thrilled to be able to host this very informative session and look forward to doing this event again in the future. Anyone wishing to obtain more information about the Drivewise Program can contact Bob Patterson or James Pastemek at www.drivewise@50plus.com.

An Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social

It was a real trip down memory lane on August 28th for the residents of Delmanor Elgin Mills Retirement Community. Who could think of a better way to enjoy a scorching afternoon than indulging on fresh creamy ice cream made right in front of you!

Afya Horticulture presenter Sean Chubbuck, joined the seniors to demonstrate ice cream churning and to reminisce about the way ice cream was made 50-100 years ago.

After each of the residents had an opportunity to turn the crank handle, the mouthwatering ice vanilla treat was sampled by all!

What an indulgent way to bring some nostalgia back, and enjoy during the dog days of summer.
