Spring Fashion Show and Trunk Sale at Delmanor Wynford!

Fashion was the buzz word at Delmanor Wynford as the residence was transformed into a fashion showcase gala event.  The sophisticated and gorgeous resident models featured new vibrant spring fashions in the latest colours and collections from Alia N TanJay Eglinton Square.

The exciting fashions boosted the moods of the seniors in so many ways.  Both the residents that modeled the clothing and those that were spectators.  The models loved that they were able to try on new colours and styles.  The packed house marveled in the inspiration that the beautiful spring clothes brought to Delmanor Wynford.  After a winter that never seemed to end, fun and energetic styles gave everyone a pick me up that will surely last for days!

Residents and guests were treated to fresh fruit and decadent baked goods after the show while the seniors happily decided on which outfits they just had to have!

Rocking with Elvis at Delmanor Elgin Mills!

When you think of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th Century, few would contest that Elvis Presley would be at the top of the list.  Having touched the lives of generations through his music, he has remained one of the world's most popular and influential music icons of all time.

Residents and guests of Delmanor Elgin Mills took a journey back to recapture some of the magic that was Elvis Presley.  Award winning tribute artist Bruce Andrew Stewart rocked the house with an energetic and charismatic performance of some of the King's greatest hits.

The atmosphere was electric as everyone was up dancing and toe-tapping to all of the familiar tunes.  Wonderful memories were rekindled by simply listening to the music that has brought so much joy to everyone and continues to do so today.

Floral, Fruit & Fun! Edible Event at Delmanor Wynford

Eating fruit has never been so sweet, especially when preparing 'edible arrangements' at Delmanor Wynford!

Residents tapped into their creative side as they turned regular fruit into beautiful and appetizing floral bouquets.  Watching fruit come to life in an arrangement inspired the Wynford seniors to have fun and use their imaginations to create something beautiful.

Residents were thrilled to see an apple transformed into a swan and flowers made out of kiwi, oranges and strawberries.

The event inspired the residents to use their artistic and innovative ideas to bring smiles to every face at Delmanor Wynford.  Many tricks were learned at this fun session that will allow the seniors an opportunity to impress family members at the next dinner party.  Although there was great anticipation to taste the beautiful creations, Wynford residents first enjoyed the beautiful displays that were set up in the Massey Pub.

Salma, co-op student from Seneca helped the residents design and assemble their creations

Everyone enjoyed the endless possibilities of creations that can be made with various types of fruit.  What better way to celebrate the start of spring and the beauty of fresh fruit!

Technology Seminar at Delmanor Northtown

Residents and invited guests of Delmanor Northtown were given the opportunity to learn about some of the latest developments in technology!

Delmanor Northtown welcomed Chris, a University of Toronto graduate with a degree in Communication, Culture and Information Technology, who has been helping generations stay connected for many years.

The seminar focused on the many benefits for seniors with using computers. They can stay in touch with family and friends, discover old friends, track investments, do daily banking or take advantage of the many learning opportunities available through the Internet.  The seniors in attendance were very motivated to improve their computer skills and with good reason.  Connected seniors are more likely to be happier and healthier than those seniors who do not use the Internet. Evidence has shown time and time again that seniors who are connected to others are less likely to suffer from depression. In an time where more of us live further away from family and friends than ever before, the Internet has helped seniors to stay connected.

The Internet gives seniors better access to health care.  Communicating by email is a method used by more and more health care professionals.  They also can do research if they want to know more about a drug they are taking or symptoms they might be experiencing.

Truly lifelong learners generally have a better quality of life.  The Internet provides the ability to quickly get information about world events, politics, sports, and virtually every interest imaginable.
The Internet also fosters independence for seniors.  Seniors are now much more likely to shop online, which eliminates the need for transportation, especially in poor weather conditions.

Everyone enjoyed the demonstration of the latest devices available, including software and hardware for communication, entertainment and networking.

The residents were given the opportunity to ask questions about the various types of devices available and the benefits of each.  In a world that can often be intimidating for seniors, Chris relayed the information in a a clear and understandable manner.  No one was left confused or unsure about the content of the seminar, and in fact, many of the residents felt encouraged to go and and purchase a device to put some of their new skills to work!

Whether they considered themselves a 'techy" or not a "techy", the audience enjoyed the demonstration of "Siri", an interactive voice program that can answer virtually any question it is asked, along with hearing about the most amazing and popular applications or "apps".

Steps to LivingWell

What is it about a poem? We seem to have fallen out of the habit of reading, studying, let alone writing poetry. Yet there can be nothing quite like a fine poetic prose to bring us back to a moment, a time, or place in our memories.
April is National Poetry Month, and a good time for us to reflect on why poetry is good for our minds (and our souls). Poetry is just one of the many different, often unexpected ways we can keep our brains challenged and vibrant. Numerous studies have shown that intellectually engaging activities such as reading or writing poetry can be critical to maintaining our mental acuity and potentially reducing our risk for dementia over our lifetimes.

Why is poetry good for our brains? First, poetry engages our minds. Often we read passively or simply to learn what we need to know. We cannot do this with a poem. By its very nature, a good poem asks us to delve a bit deeper to best discern its intention.  Second, poetry gets our creative juices flowing. Whether we read or even choose to write verse, poetry forces us to think out of our own box or experience. Finally, since poems come in all sizes, we can all find a poem to engage with no matter how short we are on time, making it an intellectual exercise that fits all time budgets.

It's a fortunate person whose brain
Is trained early, again and again,
And who continues to use it
To be sure not to lose it,
So the brain, in old age, may not wane.
