Steps to LivingWell

Shield yourself from the Aging effects of the sun. By some estimates, sun exposure accounts for nearly 90 percent of age related damage to often-exposed areas such as the face, the back of the neck and the back of the hands.  Ultraviolet (UVA) rays are responsible for long-term photo aging, while UVB’s are behind sunburns.  Both types damage healthy skin cells and make it harder for skin to heal, and both play a role in skin cancer.  It can also make your skin thicker in some areas and thinner in others, affecting skin tone and texture.
Slathering on sunscreen is a smart strategy for both preventing and undoing sun damage.  Using sunscreen everyday allows sun damaged skin time to heal. To get the most benefit from sunscreen, apply a broad spectrum formula of at least SPF 30 half hour before going outdoors – even on cloudy days.  Reapply every two hours, especially if you’re sweating, wet, or have dried or rubbed your skin with a towel.  Wear a hat and avoid being out in the sun at peak times.

Since no sunscreen can block all UV rays, some radiation does get through to skin.  Look for products with sun protection and antioxidants in one bottle.  Check the expiration date: Sunscreen usually lasts three years, but toss it sooner if it has separated or has an off smell.
The truth is that it is never too late for sun protection.  Keeping your skin healthy can help you enjoy your senior years to the fullest.

The "Hell's Grannies" Delight at North York Seniors Centre

The North York Seniors Centre recently held the premiere of the documentary "Hell's Grannies".

This inspiring documentary features 78 year old Sybil Rampen.  Once day Sybil realized that the years were slipping by her, so she decided to try and re-energize her life.  Inspired by her adventurous travels across Europe in her 20's, Sybil gathered up seven of her closest friends to try something new and fun together.  Instead of engaging in sweet grandmother-like activities, Sybil decided to start up a motor cycle gang of grannies.  The ladies wear leather outfits, hang out in a clubhouse, do television shows, pose for photographs and generally "raise hell", love and laughter!

The wonderful Sybil Rampen
Kelly James and Keri Mingo from Delmanor Seniors Communites were in attendance as proud supporters of this premier event.  Following the documentary, there was a short question and answer session with the film's star Sybil Rampen, and producer David Bjurney from East Hill Productions.

This widely popular documentary was a huge success on its premiere night!  Along with some hilarious and inspiring ladies, the documentary taught everyone about being ridiculous, taking chances, and recognizing the value of life in all stages!

The Toronto Mandolin Orchestra Visits Delmanor Prince Edward

The Toronto Mandolin Orchestra, founded in 1956, is one of Canada’s oldest community performing groups. It is a continuation of the proud tradition of mandolin orchestras and schools which flourished in the Ukrainian, Jewish, Russian, Macedonian, Finnish and other communities in Canada.

The orchestra has performed on prestigious stages across Canada and twice toured Ukraine. Though founded in the Ukrainian community, the Ensemble’s membership (Ukrainian, Russian, Jewish, Serbian, Macedonian, Hungarian, Asian, English, Peruvian and more) is as ethnically diverse as its repertoire which spans classical, folk, popular, and original music.

Orchestra Soloists Hassan, Adele, Tanya Helen & Herman
On Monday, June 1st, the 30-piece Toronto Mandolin Orchestra, directed by Alexander Veprinskiy, performed an outstanding concert for the residents and team members of Delmanor Prince Edward. The beautiful sounds of the mandolin family of instruments augmented by accordions, woodwinds, piano, and percussion combined the intimacy of a chamber ensemble with all the power of a symphony. Not only were the sounds of the instruments brilliant, but the vocalists delivered an exceptional performance as well! With songs including “Ukrainian Folk Suite”, “Libiamo”, “Waltz”, “I Could Have Danced All Night”, “Polka”, “Linden Tree”, and many more, the performers left the audience speechless.

Full ensemble of Toronto Mandolin Orchestra
Residents and team members were able to enjoy some delicious desserts and refreshments, the wonderful company of friends, and beautiful music, while supporting someone very special and close to them! One of Prince Edward’s very own residents, Eda, is one of the many members of the Toronto Mandolin Orchestra and an incredible mandolinist! As an integral part of the orchestra, she displayed her wonderful talent as a musician, but also brought about a lovely, warm spirit to the performance!

Resident Eda With members Ira & Charles
The concert could have continued all night, but ultimately left the audience in a standing ovation. Residents and team members were in awe at the beauty and grace that the Toronto Mandolin Orchestra brought to the residence and look forward to enjoying their talents again!

Delmanor Elgin Mills "Walk for Alzheimer's'

Hundreds of thousands of Canadians are living with Alzheimer's Disease.  A diagnosis of Alzheimer's is life changing for the person with the disease, as well as for their family and friends.

For the past 24 years, 'Walk for Memories' and 'Memory Walks' have become the largest fundraising events in Canada to gain support and awareness for Alzheimer's disease and other dementia's. Due to increased awareness in not only the disease itself, but also in the annual Walks, the Alzheimer Society of Canada changed the title of the event to simply, Walk for Alzheimer's.

Delmanor Elgin Mills is a proud supporter of the Walk for Alzheimer's and have committed to this event for at least the next five years.  As Alzheimer's disease affects many families in some capacity in Canada, Delmanor Elgin Mills feels passionately about devoting time and resources to this important annual event.

Everyone had a great time at the 2015 Walk for Alzheimer's.  The day was further complimented with live entertainment, refreshments and prizes.

"We're walking for a world without Alzheimer's", together.

Steps to Livingwell

If you’re looking for one simple diet adjustment to offset your naturally slowing metabolism as you get older, drinking more water could be your golden ticket. Research found that people who were regular water drinkers consumed an average of 193 fewer calories a day than people who didn’t drink any water.
Starting your meal with a glass of water can also help you eat less.  Think water is boring?  Add a twist of lemon or lime, or add fresh berries to a pitcher of water and keep it in the fridge to infuse it with calorie-free flavour.
You’ll need to sip other beverages selectively to avoid empty calories.  If you’re a fan of fruit juice, switch to 100 percent juice varieties that contain pulp to get a little fibre with no added sugar.  Since sugar promotes fat storage around your middle, making better choices may not only result in a lower number on the scale, but it may help reshape your figure and prevent or reverse the stereotypical middle-age spread.

As we age, the balance between our need for water and our thirst for water shifts.  In fact, the less water an older person drinks, the less thirsty they become, leaving them open to the risk of serious dehydration and other complications.
Adjust your beverage intake based on outside temperature, activity level and medical conditions.  Eating a diet of a variety of foods and drinking water regularly will help you stay healthy and hydrated.

Delmanor Glen Abbey Residents Go to School!

More commonly, students will visit the residents of Delmanor Glen Abbey for performances and holiday events.  To try something different, the Delmanor Glen Abbey seniors visited St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary School to experience a day in the life of local high school students.

The school extended an invitation to the seniors in order to share time with the younger generation to build relationships and foster the inter generational bond.  With many successful events that have been held in the past with St. Ignatius of Loyola, the residents were thrilled with the opportunity to visit the school first hand.

After morning Mass with the students, the residents went on a guided tour of the school.  Following the tour, the students sat with the seniors and enjoyed coffee, home-made cookies and wonderful conversation.

The visit was very popular with the Delmanor Glen Abbey residents and students alike.  Another visit has been arranged for the fall season to continue to build relationships and mentor-ship opportunities between the generations.

Delmanor Prince Edward Residents Enjoy a Jays Game!

The baseball fans of Delmanor Prince Edward attended the Toronto Blue Jays vs. Chicago White Sox game recently at the Rogers Centre. With fantastic weather and the dome open wide, it was the perfect night for an exciting game!

Residents came prepared for the game, dressed in their Blue Jays attire, and enjoyed snacks and drinks to beat the heat. The residents were seated right along the first base line and were able to be a part of the roaring crowd, especially since it was such a close game. With the Jays down 9-7 in the bottom of the 9th inning, Blue Jays third-baseman, Donaldson, scored a home run helping them pull off a 10-9 victory!

Amongst all the excitement, the residents managed to get a photo with Blue Jays mascot, Ace, as he circled the crowd bringing nothing but smiles and team spirit.

A Day with Exotic Animals at Delmanor Northtown

Animals and pets can bring us such joy and can provide such enrichment to our lives.  Being exposed to animals expands our horizons and teaches us about wildlife from different regions and habitats.

The black and white Ruffed Lemur from Madagascar, along with the many other exotic animals that were on display at Delmanor Northtown brought the seniors much joy.  They took welcoming everyday pets such as cats and dogs one step further by bringing in exotic and exciting animals to their homes!

Tony enjoying the show!

'Hands on Exotics" is an animal shelter that is based out of Toronto that specializes in the care of exotic animals.  The background of the animals varies, some are surrendered because the owners could no longer care for them, while others are from less fortunate situations where they were seized from inadequate or abusive situations.

In order to fund the care of these animals, 'Hands on Exotics' offers a wide range of outreach programs such as the wonderful show that was presented at Delmanor Northtown.  It was a truly positive and feel-good experience for all and a memory that the seniors will not forget.

Offering new and unique opportunities to residents is something that Delmanor Northtown strives to do everyday.  The seniors can now add experiences such as wearing a snake around their shoulders, holding a parrot, and even getting up close and personal with a de-skunked skunk to the  list of the many experiences that they have been privileged to experience while residing at Delmanor  Northttown.
