Urban Poling Demonstration at Delmanor Northtown

Urban Poling, or otherwise known as 'Nordic Walking', is one of the best forms of fitness and rehabilitation for people in all stages of life.

This form of walking is a fun and social activity that can be performed in a variety of settings and can cater to environmental variables.

Delmanor Northtown residents and guests took part in this very interesting seminar that demonstrated how to maximize physical health benefits when using their urban poles.  The presenters introduced the ACTIVATOR program to the residents.  It is a program that is specifically geared toward those individuals that require additional stability or balance in their fitness routines.

Implementing urban poling into their fitness routines has allowed many people to walk more, both indoors and out, resulting in improved overall health.  There were many true stories shared from individuals that credit their Nordic Walking poles for great improvement in their health and fitness.

This wonderful demonstration inspired many of the Delmanor Northtown seniors to try this new form of fitness, to learn how to use the most effective techniques, and to get up and get poling!

Steps to LivingWell

The Cardiac Health Foundation of Canada is a charitable organization supporting cardiac rehabilitation, prevention and education across Canada raising $11 Million since 1965.

The Cardiac Health Foundation of Canada’s WALK OF LIFE will be taking place on Saturday, May 30th, 2015 at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto marking its 50th anniversary.

There is no denying it: exercise is good for you! Whether you are a casual walker to the more serious, athletic walker you will want to lace up those shoes and get moving – a lot! As well, Urban Pole Walking can be enjoyed by everyone and is most popular amongst 55 to 75 year olds (with a large amount of happy, healthy 75 to 98 olds as well). The reason for this is that most people in this age category already love to walk. They walk socially, for fun or for exercise, so adding Poles simply makes sense. Pole Walking makes walking more beneficial (increasing cardio and calorie burn) and it actually takes less effort to do and is easier on the body; lessening the impact when hitting the ground – on your back, hip, knee, ankle and/or feet.

Join Delmanor’s residents, families and team members on Saturday May 30th as we participate in the WALK OF LIFE to raise funds and to enjoy a fun filled active day.

You can donate by going to www.cardiachealth.ca and registering under the team name Delmanor.

Delmanor Glen Abbey Residents Dance Away the Afternoon!

Delmanor Wynford Honours the "Day of Pink"

Delmanor Wynford residents and team members were encouraged to wear pink in recognition of the international day devoted to awareness of bullying and discrimination.

It was wonderful to see how many of the Wynford seniors were able to find an article of clothing or accessory in a shade or tone of pink to show their support.

From scarves, shoes, jewellery, pants and shirts, everyone tried to find some pink to incorporate into their attire.  Even the wonderful Delmanor Wynford gentlemen happily wore pink for this important day.

The 'Day of Pink' was created to inspire youth to help to make a change in themselves and to help others to stop bullying.  Although bullying is generally associated with school age children, various forms of bullying takes place in our communities, workplaces, or in groups of family and friends.  Everyone has witnessed bullying in some form, and we must all try to work together to stop it.

The Delmanor residents and staff members were inspirational with their participation in this event.  They hope to encourage others to eliminate bullying from their families and communities.

Delmanor Wynford Residents Visit Ripley's Aquarium!

The residents of Delmanor Wynford recently spent an afternoon at the incredible Ripley's Aquarium in downtown Toronto.

The event attracted residents with diverse interests.  Some of the seniors were looking for a day out, others wished to share a day with a friend or family member, others went to observe the beautiful display of sea creatures, and then some went to soak up all of the knowledge that they could from this world class aquarium attraction.  No matter what their reasons for going, all of the residents found what they were looking for and more at Ripley's Aquarium!  All of the seniors that attended the event were raving when they returned home to Delmanor Wynford about the overwhelming display of marine life and interactive opportunities available.

All of the residents were amazed by the very active lobsters in the Canadian Waters Exhibit.  The seniors must  have watched for over 10 minutes as a lobster attempted to eat a snack of whole shrimps!  After being accustomed to seeing lobsters as sedentary creatures, the residents were intrigued at how active and determined the lobsters were to eat, and how they used their various claws with precision accuracy.

The Delmanor Wynford group arrived just in time for a feeding demonstration, where a diver swam with the stingrays and sharks to display their unique feeding rituals to the crowd.

The highlight of the event was the Dangerous Lagoon.  As you travel through a tunnel on a moving sidewalk, you are submersed in the tranquility of the music as you appear to travel through the center of the ocean.  Everywhere the residents looked they were surrounded by majestic aquatic animals; sea turtles, manta rays and other exotic marine life that were swimming all around them.  The fish and marine life were so close that the residents felt that they could reach out and touch them as they swam by.  It was an absolutely fascinating and once in a lifetime experience that everyone must try to participate in at least once!

Ripley's Aquarium provides an extensive number of opportunities for visitors to learn about and appreciate all of the aquatic marine life in the world.  It also provides guests with an opportunity to see the dangers that all aquatic life is faced with and steps each and every person can make to help to ensure their survival.

The Delmanor Wynford seniors thoroughly enjoyed this remarkable experience and hope to be able to experience Ripley's Aquarium again in the future.

Maple Syrup Festival at Delmanor Prince Edward!

As the beautiful Spring weather makes it way to Southern Ontario, so too does the maple sap!  That is exactly what the residents of Delmanor Prince Edward were anticipating while hosting their very first Maple Syrup Festival.

Expert Maple Syrup Producer, Sean Chubbuck, was on hand to explain the process, from the tapping of sugar maple trees, to the final product, maple syrup!  Sean explained that approximately 40 liters of maple sap is required to produce just one litre of maple syrup!  He emphasized the importance of drilling holes on a downward angle to ensure the sap drains into the sap collection pails hanging on the spiels.  After being informed of the many hours involved with sap collection and the boiling process, Residents had a new appreciation for the "amber liquid" and were thrilled when they had the opportunity to taste the final product. Sean prepared the always popular "Maple Syrup on Snow" for everyone in attendance.
