It was all laughs at Delmanor Northtown!

Local comedian Neil was invited to Delmanor Northtown for a hilarious comedy session that made the entire audience laugh out loud!

Neil has performed at Yuk Yuk's Comedy Club, is a member of the Joker's Club in Toronto and has even written material for Joan Rivers!

Neil with Northtown Resident

This very entertaining comedy session allowed the Northtown seniors to watch clips on legendary comedians depicting their lives and historical significance.  Neil had a wonderful talent of providing humour along with factual information to  not only keep the audience engaged, but also to keep them all laughing!

The Delmanor Experience - LivingWell

Even though March is just around the corner, the cold weather and lack of strong sunshine can result in the February blahs that don’t thaw until spring.  It’s that time of year when our energy drops, exercise dwindles and our new year’s resolutions lose their zest!  There are many ways to stay energized and healthy until spring time comes … it’s really important that we don’t let our guards down and fall into habits that can stress our bodies and minds.

There are, however, steps you can take to boost your mood and even enjoy the remainder of the winter!   Resist the urge to hibernate and get moving instead!  When you exercise, it releases endorphins in your brain, which are natural mood lifters.  Exercise will help you sleep better, too, and this is another component of beating a “blah” mood.  If you’re tired, you’re much more likely to be cranky and irritable, but after a good night’s sleep it’s easier to keep a positive outlook.

One thing most people do not do during the holidays is skimp on sweets, which is why you should consider cutting back now.  Sugar impacts your mood on a number of levels, not the least of which is causing spikes and crashes to your blood sugar level, which can make you feel like you’re riding an emotional roller coaster.

Brought to you by your LivingWell Coaches.

Entertainers weathered the storm to help celebrate at Delmanor Glen Abbey.  Andy Phillips, the steel drum musician drove from Pickering to help celebrate Fun in the Sun with the seniors.

Billiards at Delmanor Northtown

The game of billiards has been popular for hundreds of years.  For over a century, competitive billiards has been considered a sport and not just a game.  That said, it's a great sport for seniors for a number of reasons:

  1. it's safe, non contact, non strenuous and relaxing
  2. it hones your concentration, balance and motor skills.  Pool is also a strategy game that exercises and challenges your brain!
  3. it creates a social opportunity since pool tables are generally located in public areas and places
Whether the Delmanor Northtown residents were beginner or intermediate pool players, they benefited from the instructional pointers offered by Bruce, the billiards instructor that hosted the event.

The seniors didn't require previous experience with the game to have enjoyed this fun and entertaining afternoon.  The residents were thrilled to be able to witness tricks such as ball jumping and other skilled shots.  Many of the seniors left feeling inspired to try to play a game of pool for the first time while others found it an excellent opportunity to brush up on their skills!

Delmanor Wynford Residents Celebrate The Super Bowl

The Super Bowl Party at Delmanor Wynford was in full-swing long before the game started as residents and staff dressed in the colours of their favourite team! Some residents wore red in support of the San Francisco 49ers and other residents wore purple in support of the Baltimore Ravens.

Residents were also adorned with red or purple beads, whistles, and football noisemakers. Although it was clear which team each resident was cheering for, it was a friendly competition as residents enjoyed good food, great refreshments, and wonderful company.

Recreation staff Ashley & Sal are ready for the game!

A group of Wynford residents prepared a seven-layer taco dip for the Super Bowl Party that was enjoyed by all. Recreation Assistant, Sal Di Matteo, presented several football trivia questions to the group and everyone was able to work together to answer the questions.

The party then moved to the theater at Delmanor Wynford where residents enjoyed the Super Bowl on the big screen.

Residents were having fun and making a lot of noise during the game as they cheered for their teams! The residents cheering for the Baltimore Ravens were impressed with the early lead but their cheers were silenced momentarily by the big comeback from the San Francisco 49ers. Ultimately, it was the Baltimore Ravens who won the Super Bowl. Those residents cheering for the Baltimore Ravens were overjoyed with the win! Regardless, everyone had a fantastic time and cannot wait for the Super Bowl Party next year!

Symbols in Art Seminar at Delmanor Northtown

Have you ever wondered about the meaning of objects found in great works of art, such as a candle, a mirror or particular musical instrument?

The residents of Delmanor Northtown were able to enjoy an educational seminar about the many symbols found in art.  The seniors were able to learn about these symbols first hand from the presenter, Rachel, who has both years of experience at McMichael Canadian Art Gallery and years of experience as an art instructor.

The seminar was a wonderful opportunity for Delmanor Northtown art enthusiasts to discuss art with others who share their great passion. Everyone who attended the seminar had a wonderful time!
