Kicking Up Their Heels at Delmanor Glen Abbey!

In the spirit of the Calgary Stampede, Delmanor Glen Abbey residents and staff held a western themed BBQ to show that you don't have to live in Alberta to enjoy all things western!

The seniors dressed in their favourite country attire to really look the part of cowgirls and cowboys.  The residents really enjoyed wearing their comfortable jeans, plaid shirts and even a cowboy hat for some!

Glen Abbey staff
Chef Carlos put on an amazing meal for the event with a western inspired menu, including baked beans, barbecued ribs, and the very popular sundae station with sinful topping selection.

The seniors and guests were then entertained by the talented Niels Pedersen, who played top country and western hits on  his dual keyboard.  The Rodeo theme was loved by all!  Everyone had a good laugh with friends, while enjoying the fun and light spirited afternoon.

Growing Friendships and Vegetables with Delmanor Elgin Mills

Gardening is a common passion among many seniors.  Some are not able to manage the demands of taking on a garden alone, while others do not have the means or the yard to have the garden of their dreams.

Along with York Region Healthy Aging Working Group, Delmanor Elgin Mills funded this new initiative to work in partnership with the region's Public Health, Housing York, Seeds for Change and York Region Food Network.

Organizers are hoping to increase the number of these gardens which will result in a happier and healthier senior community. Residents at a seniors housing complex in Richmond Hill are tending to the garden.  They are not only producing a fresh crop of fantastic food, they are creating new friendships and a healthier perspective, along with stronger muscles and endurance.

The Official Garden Launch
The Seeds for Change initiative is planning on building 2015 new community garden plots by 2015, and that, according to the Richmond Hill gardeners is a great idea!  The residents will grow organic food and begin to develop a seed garden to use in future gardens.  The fresh vegetables are then shared among the gardeners, along with seniors that are not able to participate due to mobility issues.

The official garden launch was attended by Mayor David Barrow, Residents of Dunlop Community, Delmanor Elgin Mills residents and representatives from Public Health.

The seniors are thrilled to return to an activity that they have enjoyed so much in previous years that provides social interaction with friends, along with the rewards and gratification that comes from growing your own food.  Everyone involved in this initiative gave the idea a glowing review.  The benefits are plenty and the organizers hope that this program spreads to many other senior communities in the years to come.

The Generations Seminar at Delmanor Northtown

Residents and invited guests enjoyed an enlightening seminar about different generations currently living together in society.  The terms given to these generations are "Baby Boomers", and "Generations X and Y".

David Cravit is the author of Beyond Age Rage and The New Old.  He has over 35 years experience in advertising and marketing management in North America and is currently Vice-President of Zoomer Media Limited.    David came to Delmanor Northtown to speak about the generations and how seniors are changing all of the rules of the 'expected' way to age.

The "Baby Boomer" era refers to the surge in babies born in post WW2 between the years of 1946-1964.  The generation that immediately followed the boomers are referred to as 'Generation X' and they consist of individuals born in the early 1960's to the early 1980's.  'Generation Y' or the Millennial Generation are those that are born from the late 1980s to early 2000s.

Earlier views on aging are being replaced by a more positive outlook on the retirement years with seniors living more active and healthy lifestyles.  With the life expectancy becoming longer, there are more opportunities for multi-generations to work together, play together and even reside together.  Although there are very distinct differences between the generations, we are seeing the results that these difference are having on the world we live.

The Delmanor Northtown seniors and guests thoroughly enjoyed David's seminar and his humorous insight.  It was very interesting for everyone to learn about how the generational differences affect our world and day to day encounters, and how future generations will likely be impacted.

Steps to LivingWell

Fatigue is a common problem among older adults as many people experience a slump in energy levels by the time the afternoon rolls around.  The most common cause is post-lunch hypoglycemia, which is related to the inability to burn fat.  If you’re frequently battling with afternoon fatigue, check your lunch selections. More often than not, you’ll find that the more carb-heavy your lunch, the more apt you are to feel tired an hour or two later. To remedy the situation, focus on shifting your diet from carbs to healthful fats.
A number of factors may contribute to afternoon fatigue such as how and when you exercise as well as poor sleep habits or the inability to get a full night sleep.
Chances are you know what's causing your fatigue. With a few simple lifestyle changes, it's likely that you have the power to put the vitality back in your life. Consider these different ways to boost your energy levels.

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Limit caffeine intact
  • Eat breakfast
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Eat iron rich foods
  • Get enough sleep
The last thing you may feel like doing when you’re tired is exercising. But many studies show that physical activity boosts energy levels.  Having a glass of water and a high-antioxidant food like a prune can revitalize the body and stimulate the mind.
