Delmanor Wynford Pays Tribute to 'Rabbie Burns'!

Delmanor Wynford held a celebratory luncheon for the famous poet, Robbie Burns.  Although the Scottish legend lived between 1759 and 1796, his work and the traditions he made with Scottish people are alive and well today!
The cultural icon has his birthday celebrated throughout the world and it has become a Scottish heritage celebration.  The Delmanor Wynford seniors highly anticipate this annual tradition and many are very enthusiastic to wear their tartans, pins, scarves and kilts!  This years' celebration included the Robbie Burns Scottish themed luncheon, along with the famous 'Address to a Haggis'.  Scotsman Ken Tait arrived in full Scottish attire and piped the haggis in that was presented by Scott Schumacher.
Delmanor Wynford residents Min Yatabe and Ben Cameron said Grace followed by the toast to the haggis. Slainte!  After enjoying the fantastic lunch, the residents were treated to a traditional Highland Dancing  performance by the extremely talented McGrath Highland Dancers.
Robbie Burns Day Celebrations are always very popular with the seniors at Delmanor Wynford.  The residents who are of Scottish decent were even more appreciative of this very special occasion to reminisce and share special family traditions and experiences related to this very memorable day.

Delmanor Prince Edward Supports 'Masters of Weston Bonspiel'!

Delmanor Prince Edward has taken on an exciting event to sponsor and support in their local community!

The 'Masters of Weston Bonspiel' is a Senior Mens event that is held at the Weston Golf & Country Club.  The participants are divided into two groups; the first group was made up of 40 members that were the 'Senior-Seniors" and the second group was 40 curlers made up the "Junior-Seniors".

After a brief intermission where a few volunteers stepped in to curl following two separate falls, the teamwork was outstanding and held the tournament together until the two seniors that fell returned in perfect health!

As the first group came off of the ice, the winning team purchased a beverage for their counterparts on the other team!  Such a display of sportsman-like behaviour, and exactly what this Bonspiel event is made of!

All of the curlers then enjoyed a wonderful lunch buffet of pulled pork sandwiches and soup.  A lovely treat to complete a fantastic afternoon.  Four curlers from Oakville attended the event for the first time.  Delmanor Glen Abbey has sponsored the seniors mens bonspiel for many years,  and it was wonderful having a sister property to share this afternoon with!

Julie Shuster, Marketing & Community Relations Manager from Delmanor Prince Edward spoke to the seniors about Delmanor Prince Edward and provided retirement living information about options available to active seniors.  The curlers all thanked Julie and Delmanor Prince Edward for their generous sponsorship of this great event and hope to be involved together for many years to come. The afternoon was closed with a ballot draw for a bottle of Glen Fiddich Whiskey.  What a successful event!

Steps to LivingWell

February is Heart Awareness Month, and there’s no better time than now to do a check on your lifestyle habits and whether they’re heart healthy or not.
Though heart disease risks increase with age, it doesn’t have to be an inevitable part of aging. The right routines and a heart-healthy diet can help protect you; but too often we focus on the barriers rather than the opportunities.

You can keep your heart healthy no matter how old you are, but it does take effort; possibly even changes in your everyday habits, such as eating a heart-healthy diet and increasing your activity level. Any kind of activity that raises your heart rate is good - dancing, cycling, bowling, table tennis to name a few; but walking is perhaps the most popular.  Walking is easy and inexpensive, and you can adjust your speed to your fitness level.  A simple way to determine if you are working hard enough is to perform the “talk test”. If your breathing is somewhat hard while you’re exercising but you can talk without gasping for air, you’re in the target zone.  Strength training also keeps blood vessels young and flexible while increasing blood flow. It can help your heart work more efficiently and reduce cardiovascular risk factors as well.
Enjoy and savour the flavour of healthy foods for your heart such as fruits and vegetables, nuts and whole grains while limiting saturated fats, salt, and foods containing cholesterol, like fatty meats.  A high-fibre diet will do double duty of filling you up and helping prevent inflammation of the arteries.

And of course we have chocolate!  Many health benefits of dark chocolate are based around its various ingredients to fight free radicals and minimize the effects of aging.  That’s one study to hang your hat on!

Robbie Burns Celebration Luncheon at Delmanor Prince Edward

The fantastic staff of Delmanor Prince Edward surprised and delighted their residents and guests with Scotch whiskey and the 'Ode to a Haggis' Ceremony.  The legendary Scottish poet, Robbie Burns, was celebrated while the Haggis was piped in through the Kingsway Dining Room by a live Scottish Bag Piper.

The Scottish Dancers
Residents and guests were extremely grateful once again for the culinary talents from Chef Gaurav and his team for creating an inspiring luncheon featuring Scottish Potato Salad, Cock-a-Leekie Soup, Scotch Eggs, Seared Salmon with Tipsy Leek Sauce & spectacular Cranachan for dessert!

The mouth-watering luncheon honoring the famous poet of Scotland was complimented by a group of ladies and gentlemen from The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society performing the Scottish Country Dance in the Old Mill Lounge.  Scottish Country Dancing is the traditional dance of Scotland.  It is based upon ancient folk dances, mixed with elements of ballet, influences from the Royal Court of France, with some overlap with Highland Dancing.  It was a wonderful afternoon of amazing food, with energetic and vibrant entertainment celebrating Scotland's favourite son.

Practicing & Promoting Safety at Delmanor Northtown

Retired Police Officer Bob Paterson was invited to Delmanor Northtown to discuss safety tips with residents and invited guests.

Promoting safety is obviously one of the key components within the police department, and with Mr. Paterson's vast experience, he was able to provide the seniors with much insight into this area of law enforcement and protection.

Bob informed the residents of many helpful safety tips tell tale signs of potential danger that should never be ignored.  One area of great concern involves relationships that are made either online or though other means.  When it comes to love, a new friendship or romance, people tend to let their guards down and make themselves vulnerable to predators.

Mr. Paterson told the residents that the other potential dangerous area to watch out for, especially with seniors, is charitable donations.  While most of us want to help when we can, there are safe and secure ways of donating to these charities.

Bob explained to the seniors that with new technology, comes new opportunities for crimes to be committed.  The Delmanor Northtown residents were very grateful for this insight and the safeguards that were given to them to help protect themselves from harm.

Delmanor Wynford Residents Learn Nordic Pole Walking!

Delmanor Wynford Residents and Community Members, joined with Greg Bellamy from Nordixx Pole Walking for a Nordic Ski Pole Walking Demonstration.

Greg's informative presentation included details on cross country ski origins, along with the wonderful health benefits that can be achieved with pole walking.  The activity uses 90% of the body's muscles and burns twice as many calories as conventional walking.  With the use of poles, it provides extra stability by encouraging good posture, as well as causing less strain on the hips and knee joints as compared to straight walking alone.

Baycrest Geriatric Hospital recommends pole walking as an ideal exercise for maintaining good brain health along with the many physical health benefits.  This is due to the co ordination required for simultaneous arm and leg movements.

The Delmanor Seniors were anxious to take the poles for a "test drive" throughout the Wynford Centre.  They were impressed by the stability and confidence that came from using the poles.  The residents could not believe the wonderful workout that they experienced from this very versatile exercise program!
