The Joy of Hats, at Delmanor Northtown

There once was a time that everyone would not think of going out in public without wearing a hat!

The Northtown Models
Norma, best known as "The Hat Lady", is an expert in vintage fashion. She has a personal collection of over 2500 hats! Norma and Jim came to Delmanor Northtown to share with residents and team members information about her wonderful hat collection; some traditional, some designed for Royalty, some very rare, some one of a kind, and some very high end designer hats from past decades.

Mary
Laurie

Delmanor Northtown residents, team members, and guests, modeled their favorite hat or one from the collection, while Norma explained the history of each hat and when it would have been worn.

Everyone agreed that an attractive hat can certainly be a real spirit booster!  For those who enjoy wearing hats they were delighted to learn that hats still play an important role in fashion today.

Appreciating the Northtown Volunteers with a Vintage Carnival!

April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month,  and there was no better time to thank and recognize the wonderful volunteers of Delmanor Northtown! They give so much to others and selflessly make personal sacrifices to improve the lives of others.  The Delmanor Northtown residents and team members wanted to give a heart felt THANK YOU for their dedication, their time and for sharing their talents to enrich the Northtown community!

On Friday, April 15th Northtown's Newton Theatre was transformed into a Vintage Carnival, where red and white tents and colorful decorations took guests back to a simpler time. The room buzzed with excitement as the volunteers enjoyed candy treats, a whimsical photo booth, a delicious BBQ lunch and fun carnival games. All throughout the room, laughter and gratitude was felt, as many awestruck volunteers exclaimed: “ALL of this was planned for us!?”

Everyone at Delmanor Northtown are so very fortunate to have fantastic community volunteers who run a variety of recreational programs, upkeep the rooftop garden, organize the musical chorus and library books, chair committees and volunteer for a variety of special events. Their contributions help to make Northtown the vibrant community that it is!

All of the volunteers received a beautiful individualized “star” word cloud that included descriptions of their personalities and special traits, along with a gift and certificate of recognition from the MPs office. Everyone felt loved and inspired to continue the great work that they have been doing and continue giving their all to help others.

From all of us at Delmanor Northtown, thank you to our volunteers, as truly, you are our shining stars!

Blue Jays Fever at Delmanor Wynford!

It's an understatement to say that the residents of Delmanor Wynford are just Toronto Blue Jays Fans. Last season Delmanor Wynford took a bus load of excited residents to 2 games at the Rogers Centre, and followed them throughout the season to the playoffs. This year to start off the Blue Jays 40th season, Duane Ward was invited to Delmanor Wynford to speak about his life as a MLB baseball player and a Toronto Blue Jay.

Duane Ward was first introduced to baseball in his hometown of Farmington, New Mexico. Duane was one of the most dependable relievers in baseball during his 10-year Major League career. He holds the Blue Jays single season saves record (45 in 1993) and is a two-time World Series Champion (1992 and 1993). Over his career, Duane recorded 670 strikeouts and 121 saves and was an American League All-Star in 1993. Duane currently lives with his family in Las Vegas, but spends a great deal of time in Toronto assisting with the Blue Jays Baseball Academy, and is passionate about giving back to youth baseball.

Residents from Delmanor’s four sister properties came to Wynford in their blue, white and Jays attire to greet Duane, and ask him various questions about his life, and the current Jays team. Duane Ward answered all the resident's questions, and then autographed memorabilia and took pictures with the excited attendees. He is a wonderful and inspirational person; everyone thoroughly enjoyed the stories and memories that Duane shared.

Duane Ward's visit hyped up the residents for the Home Game opener that evening, and for the 32 people that were going to the Rogers Centre the next day to cheer on the Blue Jays in their second home game.  Blue Jays fever is definitely strong at Delmanor Wynford, everyone is looking forward to another exciting year ahead!

Delmanor Northtown's Arabian Night!

Considered to be one of the oldest known dances, the magic of belly dancing has enchanted audiences world-wide for generations. Traditionally rooted in the Middle East and the Arabian Peninsula, belly dancing made its debut at the 1893 World Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where audiences were shocked and mesmerized by the beautiful art form.

In order to fully celebrate the Arabian Nights Event at Delmanor Northtown, the intrigue and   mystique of Arabian belly dancing was brought to the residence!

The evening started off with a delicious 4-course Arabian dinner which included a fattoush salad, an exotic lentil soup, and specialty Arabic dishes prepared to tantalize the taste buds. The lounge was transformed into a Sultan’s tent with gold and maroon accents lighting up the space. As residents and guests walked in, they were quickly transported to another time and a distant, exotic place.

The belly dancer entered the tent with rhythmic music and prepared for her first dance - the Assyrian Sword Dance. Music from Egypt and Turkey that has sustained the sands of time played as the gorgeous belly dancer showed 10 different dances that represented all of the regions of the Middle East.

The audience was captivated and delighted with the authentic Arabic experience.  The wonderful dinner and entertainment complimented each other perfectly!

Another fabulous event at Delmanor Northtown!

Ukrainian Easter Egg Decorating at Delmanor Wynford

The Delmanor Wynford residents were recently treated to a presentation & workshop on the history of the Pysanky Ukrainian Easter Egg.

During this informative demonstration, the Delmanor Wynford residents learned about the history, regions, traditions, symbols, and supplies that are required to properly design the Pysanky Easter Egg.

After watching the various techniques that are utilized to create the egg decorations, the residents were encouraged to design their very own pysanky eggs.  The Wynford seniors certainly did not disappoint!  Their creativity shone through once again with their beautiful colourful creations.

This workshop was just one of the many wonderful programs held at Delmanor Wynford, where residents were given the opportunity to learn something new, with the added bonus of having a beautiful collectible keepsake to have in their homes or give as a gift.

Delmanor Glen Abbey's Continued Fundraising Success!

Ian Anderson House is Ontario’s first in-resident cancer hospice that offers without charge, quality, end-of-life palliative care.  Residents are cared for by trained medical professionals, for those who, for whatever reason, cannot be given the necessary round-the-clock care in their own homes. The House, therefore, is designed to create a homelike and safe environment where residents receive round-the-clock care and support.

Delmanor Glen Abbey is pleased to support this important and crucial organization each year through various fundraising initiatives. Such initiatives included, various jewelry sales, marketing events, and card games. This year Delmanor Glen Abbey raised and amazing $1,599! A huge contributor to this success goes to the Community Bridge group that comes to Delmanor Glen Abbey every two weeks to play a friendly game of bridge, and in turn they provide support to one of the most beneficial support services in the community.

'Long to Reign Over Us" Celebrating the Queen's 90th Birthday!

“All Hail the Queen”! Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will be celebrating her 90th Birthday on the 21st of April. To commemorate this joyous occasion Delmanor Elgin Mills welcomed The McMullen/Dark Collection of Royal Commemoratives, to display some of their unique and cherished items that span the entire reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

Commemorative items such as fine china and plates, ornamental tins, vintage photographs and books were displayed for all to see and reminisce over. The Delmanor residents even learned that the Queen enjoys her morning corn flakes out of a Tupperware bowl! Some of the displayed commemoratives  represented monumental events in the Queen’s lineage, most recently the births of her great grandchildren, Prince George of Cambridge and Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.

The fascinating presenters, Norman and Kevin shared their amazing stories of how many of their collectibles were obtained and how their collection and admiration for The Queen grew with each passing decade. Both Gentlemen were proudly wearing their Diamond Jubilee Medal in celebration of Her Majesty’s accession to the Throne. The Diamond Jubilee Medal was a tangible way for Canada to honor Her Majesty for her service to Canada.

All those in attendance had an opportunity to sign a card that will be sent to Queen Elizabeth in anticipation of her milestone birthday. Her Majesty holds the distinct honor of being both the longest reigning British Monarch, surpassing her great-great Grandmother, Queen Victoria, as well as the longest reigning Queen, also surpassing Queen Victoria, now in her 65th year of reign atop of the British Monarchy.

Everyone in attendance loved this first hand look at the very extensive and fascinating collection of artifacts and historical information about Queen Elizabeth II.  The residents were thrilled to have gained more knowledge about the Queen on this very momentous year of her remarkable reign!

Flower Arranging at Delmanor Elgin MIlls

Despite recent blasts of winter, spring has definitely arrived at Delmanor Elgin Mills!  Flower arrangers, "Blooms of Joy", came to Elgin Mills to share their sweet smelling flowers with the residents.

A large group of eager residents enthusiastically observed a flower arranging demonstration, and then created beautiful hand tied bouquets themselves!  Each participant was then given the lovely fresh cut flowers to adorn their suites.  This was a wonderful learning opportunity for many of the participants, as some of the Elgin Mills residents had never experienced how to properly cut or place flowers.  For others, they preferred to sit back and enjoy the aroma and visuals from the wonderful displays.

With such positive feedback from the residents, Delmanor Elgin Mills decided to make flower arranging a regular monthly program at the retirement community, where different flowers will be showcased depending on what is in season.  The flower arranging workshop will definitely add to the already beautiful ambiance at Delmanor Elgin Mills!

Steps to LivingWell

People with a strong social network live an average of 22 percent longer than those without one.  Why are social ties so beneficial? For one thing, having close friendships protects against depression, which is increasingly common as you get older.  That, in turn, may motivate you to take better care of yourself.  Having a network of people you can turn to in times of stress or anxiety can also give you support and practical help, ultimately minimizing stress.
Social connection keeps you physically active as well.  Studies have found that older adults who were less social had a more rapid decline in motor function.
It’s important for your well-being to have a diverse group of acquaintances, casual friends and close friends.  Whether you’re taking a class, volunteering, joining a social group or attending a lecture offered, there are countless opportunities to get involved and make new friends.  Having a wide social network, and being open to new experiences can be helpful for deepening existing relationships, and the combination of social activity can ward off cognitive decline and boost energy levels.

Socializing and meeting new people; trying new activities, especially activities involving exercise, are a few of the most important aspects of beating the depression cycle.  Remember to laugh out loud more often.  Laughter after all, is often the best medicine.

What a wonderful treat it was for the residents to be glamorized for the day, and what a fantastic service Haircuts on Wheels provides to individuals that do not have the means or ability to drive to a salon.
