Delmanor Northtown's Colour & Image Seminar

Delmanor Northtown offered a lecture and demonstration on how to improve your image and make the most out of the colours that you choose to wear.

In the cosmetics and fashion industry, color analysis, also called skin tone color matching, personal color or seasonal color, is the process of finding colours of clothing and makeup to match a person's skin complexion, eye color, and hair color. The goal is to determine the colours that best suit an individuals natural coloring and the result is often used as an aid to wardrobe planning and style consulting.

With 30 years of experience helping people with image consulting and working as a colour analyst, the host of the seminar, Karen, discussed the impact that can be made by choosing our "wow" colours.  With colours, body language and the image we wish to portray for ourselves, we generate thoughts and feelings in the people around us, and also in the way that we feel about ourselves.

The Delmanor Northtown residents and invited guests had a wonderful time learning how to identify their own colours that work best for their own personal style and personal colour preferences.  Karen provided a wealth of information to the audience on how to make colours work best for each and every one of the them, so that they may look and feel their best!

Delmanor Day 2015!

Delmanor Day is an annual event that is arranged between all five of the Delmanor Seniors Communities properties as an opportunity to socialize and get to know one another.

The event this year was held at Jack Darling Park in Mississauga on a beautiful late summer day.  The annual Delmanor Day has become a very anticipated event for all of the Delmanor Seniors.  Not only are the residents able to share experiences from their home communities and meet new friends, others who have met and become friends through previous Delmanor days are given the opportunity to reconnect and build their relationships.

The very popular Mark Kersey and Kathy Thompson entertained the group with a wonderful concert of favourite tunes from the 40's and 50's to add to the already upbeat and fun atmosphere of the day.

The Delmanor Elgin Mills Bake Off!

Nothing says fall like the delicious smell of baked apple pie!

The residents and team members of Delmanor Elgin Mills were invited to bake their own special apple pie creation to be taste tested and voted upon by eager residents and staff.  The "tasters" waited patiently in line for the opportunity to taste test the various different versions of pie that had been carefully prepared by the bakers.  The moist, delicious apples and flaky crusts of the pies were absolutely mouth-watering and made judging the pies a difficult yet fantastic experience.

The Delmanor seniors and staff alike shared family secrets and pie recipes during this fun afternoon.  The extraordinary response and overall happiness and joy that was felt with baking has inspired a baking class for any senior that would like to further develop and explore baking with the Delmanor Elgin Mills Executive Chef.

Everyone had a wonderful time at this fun and friendly event.  Celebrating the arrival of autumn with friends and pies simply could not get any better!  Everyone at Delmanor Elgin Mills is anxious to see the next creation that comes from the Delmanor Elgin Mills Baking Club!

Steps to LivingWell

In our August LivingWell article we talked about snacking throughout the day and the importance of choosing your snacks wisely. Here’s how you can stay within your daily calorie budget.  Studies show the benefits of eating breakfast-including helping you lose weight.  People who skip breakfast actually eat more calories overall (usually from sugary and fatty foods) throughout the day.  Eliminating your morning meal likely means you’re missing out on nutrients important to healthy aging.
A nourishing breakfast can jump-start your metabolism and cause you to burn calories at a higher rate all morning, helping to offset your body’s natural metabolic decline as you get older.  It can also set the stage for healthy eating all day by encouraging you to continue making wise food choices.

Eating a breakfast of muesli, yogurt, and fruit before a workout burned more fat than those who dined on cornflakes, white toast, and jam.  The muesli meal also helps you feel fuller for the rest of the day, even though both breakfasts contained the same number of calories.
To keep your total daily calorie intake in check, take a mini-meal approach.  Eating five or six small meals a day (or three moderate meals and two snacks) keeps your blood sugar and energy levels steady and humming.

To make the mini-meal approach work, you may need to revise your definition of a snack.   Sneak in more fruits and veggies to help you reach your goal and reap the benefits.  It’s hard to binge on baby carrots!

Delmanor Glen Abbey Residents Visit An Alpaca Farm!

The residents of Delmanor Glen Abbey enjoyed an afternoon at an Alpaca farm outside of Hamilton.

The Alpaca comes from South American background and resembles a small llama.  but unlike llamas the Alpaca are primarily bred for their fiber.  Alpaca fiber is used for making knitted and woven items, similar to wool.  These items include blankets, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves and ponchos.

The Alpaca farm offered an opportunity for the seniors to learn about these very gentle and friendly animals, who were eager to welcome the seniors to their homes!
.

During the visit, the residents toured the fiber shop and discovered how the Alpaca fleece is spun into a yarn and then knit into garments.  This extremely soft fiber is unique as it is hypoallergenic and naturally water repellent.

The Alpacas ranged in age from newborns to adults, with each one having its own unique personality.  The baby Alpaca captured the residents hearts with their gentle nudges and delicate touch.

All of the Delmanor Glen Abbey residents had a wonderful time on their trip to the Alpaca farm, along with the opportunity to learn about this unique and beautiful animal!
