The Bill Ferguson Bonspiel Annual Curling Event

A Bonspiel is a curling tournament that is made up of several games, and is often used as a charity or fund raising event.

It was a time for rekindling old friendships, a social opportunity to meet others with like interests, and a chance to test out new skills and techniques.

Kelly James, Jack Martin & Gordon Patterson
The Bill Ferguson Bonspiel is in its 49th year and is held annually at the Thornhill Golf & Country Club.  This very popular tradition with curlers in the GTA is one of the longest running bonspiels held in the area.

Kelly James was proud to have attended this event on behalf of corporate sponsor, Delmanor Seniors Communities.  Along with Kelly from Delmanor Seniors Communities, everyone who participated can not wait to come back next year!

Culinary Expressions with Executive Chef Andrew

The residents of Delmanor Glen Abbey were recently treated to an interactive culinary workshop with Executive Chef Andrew, and his Sous Chef Jonathan.

Using February's Chinese New Year as the theme to add some "Asian Flair" to the cooking experience, Chef Andrew and Jonathan created a vegetarian spring roll feast!

The interactive class gave the seniors an opportunity to ask questions and watch as the step by step process of creating a delicious appetizer unfolded before their eyes.  Of course, no cooking workshop would be complete without follow-up sampling.  The residents of Delmanor Glen Abbey thought that the spring rolls were fantastic!  This wonderful appetizer will be just one of a number of featured menu items in February, when the residents and staff of Delmanor Glen Abbey celebrate the Chinese New Year!

Delmanor Glen Abbey Giving Support to Local Charities

With each of the fun and exciting community events held at Delmanor Glen Abbey throughout 2014, friends from the community were given the opportunity to make small donations to help support the Ian Anderson House in Oakville.

The Ian Anderson House is Ontario's first in-resident cancer hospice that provides care to palliative patients that can not be cared for in their own homes.  The House is designed to create a home like and safe environment where residents receive around the clock care.

Staying true to the philosophies of hospice, the Ian Anderson House offers care and support to patients and their families without charge.  In order to continue to offer these much needed services, the House relies on donations from individuals, fund raisers and local businesses.

Delmanor Glen Abbey is pleased to support this extremely beneficial care facility and they have shown that small donations throughout the year can really add up!  Heidi Harrington, Lead Volunteer and Events Coordinator for Ian Anderson House was pleased to accept this donation in the amount of $1,525 and expressed her gratitude on behalf of the foundation to the residents and staff of Delmanor Glen Abbey for hosting these community fund raising events.

Cheque Presentation

The Delmanor Glen Abbey seniors and staff have unanimously agreed to continue to support Ian Anderson House through fund raising efforts into 2015 and beyond.

Heating Things Up! Flamenco Dancing at Delmanor Elgin Mills

The cold weather doesn't stop the residents at  Delmanor Elgin Mills, in fact, the seniors recently turned up the heat with an afternoon of flamenco dancing!  The residents channeled their inner -gypsy fire - and tried some flamenco dance lessons in the comfort of their own home.

The passion, fluid arms, and percussive footwork that are staples of flamenco dance were balanced with the beautiful melodies and intricate rhythms of flamenco music that was heard throughout the retirement community.

"Flamenco Fiesta" came to Delmanor Elgin Mills for an afternoon of fun flamenco lessons with the seniors.  Dancers Elenita, Leli, and their guitarist Miguel transported the seniors overseas to Spain for a demonstration of their traditional dance.  Residents were given castanets to click, along with being encouraged to dance with the professionals.

What better way to warm up on a bitterly cold day than to jump into some festive flamenco dancing in bright and cheery costumes!  The seniors had a fantastic time learning this fun and exciting style of dance and had a wonderful workout along the way!

Delmanor Northtown residents and friends enjoyed a fun and stylish New Year's Eve, with fantastic live entertainment, and wonderful company.

Isabelle & Violet and Their Party Hats

It wouldn't be a New Years Celebration without sparkling decorations, noisemakers, and festive hats.  Some of the hats that were worn were personally created by residents at a Delmanor Northtown craft class.  With a champagne toast to welcome in the New Year, residents, guests, and family members set their sights and goals on the upcoming year.  Some of the seniors made New Years Resolutions, while others simply reflected on the past year and their experiences.  Whether resolutions are big, small, or not at all, New Years Eve resembles a time for a new beginning or fresh start.

Steps to LivingWell

In the past 20 years, the number of drivers over 65 doubled in Ontario, from 600,000 to 1,200,000.   Getting older doesn't automatically mean that you shouldn’t be behind the wheel. In fact, many seniors are excellent drivers; new, young drivers are the group with the worst driving record.
Regular monitoring of driving abilities is an important part of maintaining senior health, because there comes a point with many seniors when reflexes slow and vision deteriorates, making driving no longer safe for you and others on the road.

Most seniors resist giving up their cars. In fact, more than 90 percent of seniors don’t want to give up the independence that a car symbolizes. However, an older person's family and medical team need to form a unified front if they believe he or she is no longer safe to drive.
When you do have concerns about your own or a loved one's driving ability, you can request a driving evaluation, which can be performed at a rehabilitation center or driving school. Immediate driving evaluations are recommended for anyone diagnosed with dementia, even if it's mild and in early stages. When it's no longer safe for you or a loved one to drive, your physician may write a prescription saying so.

Making the transition from being an independent driver to being a passenger can be difficult. However, creating a network of alternative transportation arrangements to get you where you need to be can go a long way toward helping you adjust.
