Delmanor Northtown Visits Historic St. Jacobs!

The residents of Delmanor Northtown frequently visit the beautiful towns of Southern Ontario ,but there is something very special, actually magical, about the scenic and historical town of St. Jacobs.

The beautiful town of St. Jacobs is a one-of-a-kind destination!  A place where horse and buggies are a common sight, but where all of the conveniences of modern life are at your fingertips.  As you pass by the Mennonite farms and the famous farmer's market that is full of freshly grown produce and baked delights, you enter into a village that is full of history and beauty.  From the lovely buffet lunch enjoyed at the Stone Crock, to the mouth-watering baked treats at the Stone Bakery, St. Jacobs is a place of wonder for the taste buds!

Feeling fulfilled, the residents of Delmanor Northtown enjoyed a scenic walk and shopping at unique and one-of-a-kind boutiques, finding items you would only find in St. Jacobs.  As all five senses of the residents were stimulated, the group continued their journey to Picard's Peanuts, where everyone indulged in their favourite salty snack, fudge, chocolate and peanut brittle.

The fun continued even on the trip home, as residents sang songs, and laughed at each others stories.  Everyone had a wonderful day at St. Jacobs, as they do at all of the Delmanor Northtown events, because when these friends spend time together, it always turns out to be an amazing adventure!

In the Shadow of the Volcano Exhibit at Delmanor Northtown

Delmanor Northtown welcomed the Royal Ontario Museum and their latest and very astonishing exhibit - Pompeii.

As one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy, Pompeii, with its fascinating history dating back before 79 AD has marvelled tourists for over 250 years.

The ROM exhibit showcases how almost 2000 yeas ago, one of the more active and dangerous volcanoes on the European Mainland, Mount Vesuvius, erupted with tremendous force and little warning.  The Southern Italian town - Pompeii, was a highly advanced Roman city at the time with a population of 11,000 people, a complex water system, an amphitheatre, gymnasium and a port.

Within 24 hours the eruption destroyed the city, killing all of its inhabitants and burying it under tons of ash.  The presenters from the Royal Ontario Museum shared with the guests and residents of Delmanor Northtown this fascinating story of Pompeii.  The residents were able to see up close some of the amazing artifacts from so long ago.

It was a unique and captivating experience for everyone.  The artifacts impressed the audience with their unbelievable preservation due to being trapped under the ash and debris and away from moisture and air for so many centuries!

The Delmanor Northtown Seniors had a wonderful time learning about the city of Pompeii and being able to see some of this wonderful exhibit from the comfort of their own homes.

The science and history of film making was discussed during the production while the seniors were given enjoyable hands-on experience at being behind the scenes during actual film making!

Steps to LivingWell

Since you need fewer calories as you age, it might be tempting to skip meals or cut snacks to keep your weight in check.  But if you miss breakfast, go too long without eating, or snack on sweets, you may not only set yourself up for diet disaster but speed up the aging process as well.  You can snack your way to weight loss while getting the energy you need to do the things you love, keep cravings under control, and stay within your daily calorie requirements.
Instead of fattening ice creams, choose summer snacks based on fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy.  This keeps the calories low while still packing in healthy vitamins, minerals and fibre. Choose foods that cool you down and make the most of Ontario produce; at its peak in the summer. Building your snacks around fruits and veggies is a delicious, low-calorie way to help you reap the benefits of their age-fighting antioxidants and protective compounds.

Planning is the key to eating healthy and snacks are no different.  You need to have a game plan to keep yourself on track when hunger strikes.   Keeping the fridge stocked with quick and healthy snacks such as carrots, celery stalks, cherries, blueberries and juicy cold grapes will help you resist those less healthy choices.
Does any fruit signal the start of summer more than a big, red, juicy watermelon?  Watermelon is the fruit of choice when it comes to a cool dessert during the dog days of summer.

Zeke O'Connor and the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation

Zeke O'Connor has been on many journeys throughout his life.  Zeke shared some of these adventures with over 65 residents and guests from the community that attended his lecture at Delmanor Prince Edward.

Zeke was a well known Canadian athlete who proudly scored the winning touchdown for the CFL's Toronto Argonauts in the 1952 Grey Cup.  Zeke moved on to climb Mount Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary and he shared some fascinating tales from this accomplishment with his audience.

Probably the most impressive achievement was becoming the founding president of the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation.  This Foundation enabled the Nepalese Sherpas to build 3 medical clinics and 17 schools over the past few decades, to establish literacy programs for women, and to spearhead a reforestation project that saw the planing of over 2 million seedlings over a 30 year span!

All of the Delmanor Prince Edward residents and guests had a wonderful afternoon listening to the interesting and inspiring stories from a fascinating man.

Afternoon Tea at Delmanor Elgin Mills

The residents of Delmanor Elgin Mills couldn't think of a nicer way to spend a summer afternoon than sipping tea and nibbling on finger sandwiches, pastries and scones, while chatting with friends.

Soft musical entertainment provided by John Lemme set the tranquil mood for the seniors to relax and mingle with friends during this delightful afternoon tea event.

Although afternoon tea is still practiced daily in most British homes, the traditional custom is not very common in North American households.  There were many of the Delmanor Elgin Mills residents that had never attended a traditional afternoon tea until this one!

The unanimous enjoyment expressed by all of those in attendance will ensure that another similar event shall be planned for the seniors in the near future!
