Delmanor Wynford's Spring Fling!

The warm weather of the season was celebrated at Delmanor Wynford as residents and guests participated in a lively afternoon of dance.

The infectious music performed by the multi-talented musician, Mr. Marty Oakes, kept everyone tapping their toes and dancing around the room.  Moods were high while many Wynford favourites were performed ranging from "Tiny Bubbles" to the hilarious "Chicken Dance".

In keeping with Delmanor Wynford's philosophy of always giving back to the community, all attendees donated non-perishable food items for Woodbine Heights Food Bank.  Everyone had a wonderful time at this fun and energetic event.

Fruit Kabob Workshop at Delmanor Glen Abbey

What fun was had by residents at Delmanor Glen Abbey as they created a fruit salad presentation - on a stick!

This wonderful, healthy side appeals to all ages from finger feeding toddlers to seniors who enjoy fun and unique ways of presenting snacks.

The residents and guests of Delmanor Glen Abbey enjoyed preparing the fruit in anticipation for the elegant kabob creations.  The prepared skewers were then dipped in chocolate for a sinful creation that was loved by all!

Residents concentrating on building their kabobs

Residents commented on how surprisingly easy it was to thread the grapes, watermelon, pineapple and bananas onto the sticks.  The result was a beautiful display of fresh fruit that they were proud to show off - but not for too long however since the temptation to try the tasty treats was overwhelming!

Steps to LivingWell

This month marks Seniors’ Month, a time when our senior citizens are celebrated all across the nation. Each June, senior men and women are honoured and recognized in a wide variety of ways in different locations. June is a time for all of us to recognize seniors and their prominent influence on our nation, their communities, their families, and other individuals around them.
We can all help the seniors in our lives by providing them with the right information at the right time.  Older adults still prefer to get their information through face-to-face contact, newspapers, and television.  One barrier to acquiring timely information is the lack of awareness of available resources and confusion as to whom the senior should contact for assistance.  As more and more resources move to a digital format, some seniors risk being left behind due to their hesitance in learning about and use computers.    However, as more seniors become computer savvy, this barrier will soon disappear.  Many government websites have helpful information; for example the OntarioSeniors’ Secretariat is a great site to visit.

The information needs of seniors haven’t changed very much in the last 20 years. They seek information that can affect their day to day living such as topics of finance, health, leisure activities and retirement living options.
Throughout the month of June, please join Delmanor Seniors Communities in recognizing our seniors whether formally or informally.

Brought to you by your LivingWell Coaches.

Delmanor Northtown Resident Conquers the CN Tower Edgewalk!

What better way to celebrate a 90th birthday then by performing the Edge Walk, over 100 stories high above the city of Toronto flanked by your grandchildren!

Betty watching her Edge Walk video

Betty Convery invited her five children to join her for this momentous occasion but was declined by each of them, claiming that the daredevil gene may have "skipped a generation".  Her grandchildren stepped up to join their amazing grandmother on this very special birthday celebration event at CN Tower's Edge Walk attraction.

Betty on Edge Walk

Local news channels, staff and residents of Delmanor Northtown, along with all three generations of Betty's family watched and cheered her on as she completed something she aspired to do.  The thrill seeker has desired to complete the Edge Walk since the CN Tower first opened this attraction three seasons ago and her family were all present as she tested her limits for the thrill of her lifetime.

Leaning back!

Full of courage and spirit, Betty felt her 90th birthday was a great reason to try the world's highest full circle hands-free walk.  Loving heights and adventure, Betty has already set her sights on sky diving for her 91st birthday......let's see how many of her grandchildren come back to attempt this feat with her next year!

What a great story about inspiration, pursuing your dreams and letting the sky be the limit!  Way to go Betty!!

Celebrating Seniors' Month and Healthapalooza!

June is seniors' month in Ontario.  2013 marks the 29th anniversary of seniors' month celebrations in our province.  This is the time of year when we take time to celebrate and acknowledge all of our diverse and fantastic seniors that call Ontario home.

Delmanor Northtown and Delmanor Wynford were invited to participate in Healthapalooza, a health focused event held at the Better Living Center in North York.  Healthapalooza is an event where seniors can learn the secrets of healthy living.  The event caters to those 50+ and provides free seminars, demonstrations, interactive fitness classes, along with an opportunity to discover resources and opportunities available to seniors in their own community.

The Delmanor Booth at Healthapalooza

The Premier of Ontario Kathleen Wynne and Minister Responsible for Seniors, Mario Sergio were among those who attended the event.

There were many senior focused participant groups that were in attendance at this event.  Those, along with Delmanor Seniors Communities believe in providing all seniors with a happier, healthier and more active lifestyle.

Wellness and the Weather Seminar with Anthony Farnell

The weather really does affect our moods and health as dramatically as it can affect our roads.

Everyone has noticed it to some degree throughout their lives. People living in hot climates with the sun shining most of the time notice an energy level entirely different from those living further north. Even people just visiting climates completely different from their own are often taken aback by the vast differences in the general attitude of locals compared to that of people back home.  As Canadians, while we are privileged to experience a vastly different climate from one season to the next, it doesn't come without the physical and emotional effects of a changing climate.

Attendees of the Wellness & Weather Seminar
Well known for his appearances on Global News as the Chief Meteorologist, Anthony Farnell was invited to Delmanor Northtown for a seminar about wellness and weather. Anthony Farnell is the meteorologist for the News Hour at 6pm and News Hour Final, the GTA's only one hour local newscast at 11pm.

Anthony during his presentation

He spoke about his job as a Meteorologist, the impact weather has on our health and about exciting current weather events and trends.

Anthony was honoured to meet Delmanor Northtown resident, Howard.  Howard was the former Assistant Deputy Minister in charge of National Meteorological Services and Director - General Chief Spokesman for Environment Canada in Ontario.  The common passion and conversations shared about weather and meteorology between Anthony and Howard were fascinating to listen to.  Anthony brought along his very popular pooch, Storm, the weather dog, for a special cameo appearance at Delmanor Northtown much to the delight of the residents.

Peace Tree Day Celebrations at Delmanor Wynford

Peace Tree Day was first proclaimed in Toronto by former Mayor David Miller on June 1, 2006. It is an event celebrated annually in the City of Toronto. Mayor Rob Ford continued the tradition this year and proclaimed June 1st as Peace Tree Day. It is an opportunity to inspire children and youth to share and celebrate peace and diversity through the arts. In the past, Peace Tree Day celebrations have been held at City Hall downtown and at Mel Lastman Square with students across the Greater Toronto Area and Ontario.

This year, for the first time, the Toronto Peace Tree Ambassadors wanted to share their peace and diversity workshops with seniors and their grandchildren. Approximately 15 children between the ages of 8-10 arrived at Delmanor Wynford on June 1st and conducted a number of wonderful peace and diversity workshops including ‘Bollywood/Flamenco’ dance, Chinese Brush Painting, Yoga, Aboriginal Dot Painting and Cultural Trivia.

Residents and staff at Delmanor Wynford were inspired by the outstanding workshops and were extremely impressed with the children. The residents had the opportunity to interact with the children and learn about diversity. It was truly inspiring to be able to have so many different cultures come together and learn about each other in a peaceful environment.

The residents and staff were honoured to have the children (Peace Tree Day Ambassadors) celebrate Peace Tree Day at Delmanor Wynford. The celebration ended with all participants having a better understanding of different cultures and realizing that coming together and learning about each other will build a stronger community for everyone.
