St. Paddy's Day Celebrations Continue at Delmanor Glen Abbey!

The Irish celebrations across Delmanor Seniors Communities were very evident at Delmanor Glen Abbey, as residents and guests were treated to a day of Irish celebrations!

A 50/50 'Pot of Gold" draw was held to test the 'luck of the Irish'.  The draw was set up to support Ian Anderson House, a very popular charity for Delmanor Glen Abbey.  Residents were treated to an afternoon tea, complete with Bailey's Irish Cream and shamrock cookies, as Doris Hamm was announced as the lucky winner of the 50/50 charity draw! The Delmanor Glen Abbey seniors were then indulged with a  wonderful Irish inspired meal that included a traditional  menu with decadent desserts.

After the fantastic meal, the seniors were thrilled with the upbeat performance by "The Blazing Fiddles".  The talented band had everyone toe-tapping and hand-clapping to the wide variety of traditional Irish music.

Delmanor Northtown Residents Celebrate, 'Celtic Style'!

Delmanor Northtown residents found everything, from traditional Irish folk music, to a mouthwatering Irish menu, shamrocks galore, and of course, Irish folk tales and legends, all to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

The days' events started with a morning game of Jackpot Bingo for those seniors that were feeling the 'luck of the Irish'.  Following Bingo, residents were treated to some Irish desserts and tea.  The Northtown seniors loved dressing up in their favourite Irish themed outfits, all of which further added to the festive atmosphere of the day.  Spirits were high while the festivities continued during an afternoon of Irish entertainment in the Willowdale Lounge.  A wonderful guest speaker captivated the audience with tales and legends from Ireland's past, along with historical facts related to St. Patrick's Day.

Prior to their evening meal, Delmanor Northtown residents were given the opportunity to enjoy some Guinness Beer in the pub during Cocktail Hour.  The traditional Irish St. Patrick's Day feast that followed certainly did not disappoint!  Residents enjoyed Whiskey and Orange Marmalade Bread Pudding to complete the wonderful meal presented by Chef Divakar and his talented culinary team.

The celebrations continued even after dinner as residents were treated to live entertainment in the Willowdale lounge.  It was quite a celebration for Delmanor Northtown residents.  Whether of Irish decent or not, the party continued throughout the entire day!  Coming from the laughter and singing that could be heard throughout the retirement community, it will definitely be a day that will not soon be forgotten.

Delmanor Elgin Mills residents celebrated St. Patrick's Day with a green themed, Irish food and green beer tasting kind of party!

Many of the residents of Delmanor Elgin Mills have an Irish background, with this, the festivities were turned up a notch while the Irish residents shared Irish jokes and sang along with the music.  The "Par Three Duo" provided popular Irish tunes for the event that had everyone tapping their toes and dancing along with the beat.

Susan & Helga
The Delmanor Elgin Mills Culinary Team prepared a very festive and visually stunning Irish meal for the occasion that included unique options such as green spinach puffs and green potato skins. The Delmanor Elgin Mills lobby was decorated with festive green party accessories and shamrocks galore, that further added to the fun and care-free celebrations of the popular Irish holiday.

No St. Paddy's Day party would be complete without green beer and non-alcoholic green beverages, so that the seniors could collectively toast all things Irish!

Hot Chocolate Workshop at Delmanor Glen Abbey

Is there a better way to beat the cold and snow of a Canadian winter than with fresh made, straight from the cocoa bean, hot chocolate?

With the expertise of Sean Chubbuck, who arrived with his press in tow, the residents of Delmanor Glen Abbey witnessed how cocoa beans can be transformed into a cup of sinfully delicious hot chocolate.  Glen Abbey resident Myrtle, assisted with this transformation while Sean used his knowledge (and muscle) to demonstrate the process.  Residents watched keenly while listening to Sean's very interesting historical count of chocolate making.

Sean with Myrtle

This wonderful aroma from the demonstration lured staff and passersby to stop in to taste Sean's creation.  With the smell of chocolate throughout the main floor of Delmanor Glen Abbey, everyone felt more inspiration to hold on for warmer temperatures that are on the way!

Delmanor Glen Abbey's expert panel of residents and staff came up with the resounding verdict of DELICIOUS!  Everyone noticed the dramatic taste, flavour and aroma that comes from fresh made hot chocolate over that of store bought varieties.  It was such a popular treat that the residents are almost looking forward to next winter so that they can enjoy more hot chocolate in the chilly weather.......well, almost!

The Wonderful World of Circus at Delmanor Elgin Mills

It's a rare occasion if a circus show can not bring a smile to the faces of its audience.  This was definitely true for the residents and guests of Delmanor Elgin Mills the day that the circus came to town!

The fun filled presentation consisted of a dove show, a dog show, extraordinary juggling, along with a fascinating magician.  There was excellent participation from audience members as performers invited residents to hold twirling balls and catch flying doves.  The audience members were dancing to the upbeat music that kept Delmanor Elgin Mills buzzing with excitement throughout the entire show!

The canine portion of the event was surely one of the most popular with the seniors.  Exceptionally well trained poodles performed amazing feats of agility and balance; jumping through and over hoops and balancing gracefully on balls.

Most commonly, memories of attending a circus stem from childhood.  This was indeed true for many of the Delmanor Elgin Mills seniors, many of whom hadn't attended a circus since their youth.  The excitement and thrills that were delivered from the performance could be felt throughout the entire retirement community!

Residents and guests were laughing and had smiles on their faces during the show and for many hours after it had ended while speaking to friends about some of the highlights.  A few of the seniors even took part in the show as volunteers for some of the acts.

We all know how laughter is a wonderful pick-me-up, and this event certainly was a huge success in bringing smiles and laughter to the residents of Delmanor Elgin Mills.

Delmanor Northtown's New & Exciting International Student Program!

A new initiative that Delmanor Northtown piloted, allows a volunteer student from Europe to come to Canada to contribute and learn from the wonderful staff and residents of Delmanor Northtown.

Joanna was selected after an extensive interview process that was conducted with the technological advances provided by Skype.  Joanna was required to pass the interview portion, have a criminal safety check performed, as well as meet the educational requirements in order to be selected for this unique learning opportunity.

Joanna brought with her new and diverse ideas that have been used to help plan activities and events within the recreation department at Delmanor Northtown.

To witness first hand how an action filled, full-service independent living community operated was a fantastic learning opportunity for Joanna.  She was able to see how the enriched programs that are offered in a Delmanor Community differed from those that are offered in her home town.  Joanna felt that all of the wonderful knowledge that she gained from this experience would  benefit the seniors that she was involved with at home.  The Delmanor Northtown seniors and staff thoroughly enjoyed spending time with Joanna and learning about the different social experiences and activities that take place in other areas of the world.

Retirement living at Delmanor Seniors Communities provides wonderful options for an enriched and healthy retirement.  This unique student program is just one of the many ways that Delmanor continues to be ahead of the curve with new ideas to enhance the lives of their residents.

Progressive Bridge Tournament at Delmanor Wynford

Residents and members of the Delmanor Wynford community that were seeking a bridge tournament with learning potential, gathered in the Wynford Centre to learn from Bridge Master, Alex Kornel.

During the tournament, Alex explained how understanding the technique of effective bidding is key to successful bridge playing.  Through this in-depth explanation of bidding, Alex was able to communicate the process of limit raises, and what that bid means during play.

The participants listened intently to the wonderful tips and wealth of knowledge that Alex offered to them.  After a wonderful opportunity to try out these new skills with some competitive play, the participants took a break for refreshments that also included excited discussions about the many new skills that were acquired during this fun and informative event.

Art Expression at Delmanor Glen Abbey

Expression and creativity through artwork promotes well being at every age.  When participating in art therapy, seniors relax, explore, share, and enjoy the creative and social benefits of the activity.

Artistic expression helps individuals cope with lifestyle changes, physical limitations, and periods of social transition.  The artists at Delmanor Glen Abbey were engaged in colour and creativity under the expert guidance and instruction of Natasha.  In this hands-on workshop, the students were given the opportunity to explore their hidden talents and imagination through paint and brush strokes.

Art Instructor Natasha has an amazing artistic skill set including the ability to take the spirit of sentimental photographs and bring them to life on canvas.  The Delmanor Glen Abbey residents were very impressed with some of the wonderful artistic skills that they were not aware that they possessed.

The Delmanor Glen Abbey Artists
The art program held at Delmanor Glen Abbey is available to all levels of artists, from beginners through to advanced skills.  All of the participants thoroughly enjoy this art class and the enjoyment they receive from participation in this program with friends and neighbours.

Seniors Making a Difference in York Region!

Residents and staff of Delmanor Elgin Mills, along with 2 other retirement residences in South York Region, have been working together to present "These Boots are Made for Walking" Vintage Fashion Show at the Thornill Golf and Country Club.

Proceeds from this exceptional fundraising event have been donated to 'Mosaic Interfaith - Out of the Cold."  This initiative has been created to give seniors the opportunity to actively participate as models in a vintage fashion show, while helping those less fortunate in their local community.

The Oscars, Celebrated in Style at Delmanor Elgin Mills

The residents of Delmanor Elgin Mills hit the red carpet with a tribute to the Academy Awards, honouring the past five decades of feature film excellence.  The retirement community was transformed into an Oscar party, complete with a "paparazzi" backdrop for residents dressed in boas, hats, and with miniature academy awards, to pose for a picture on the red carpet.

The residence was alive with music taken from some of the greatest scores of popular movies over the past 50 years.  The seniors sang along to familiar tunes and learned about some of the stories behind their favourite movie ballads.

Historic photographs from the long history of the Academy Awards were placed throughout the room as residents were encouraged to guess which celebrity was showcased.  The winner was awarded a genuine movie clapboard as a wonderful keepsake of this fun event.
