The Journey of the Monarch Butterfly with Delmanor Northtown

With their striking appearance and unbelievable migration pattern, the Monarch butterfly is the most familiar of North American butterflies.  As the Monarch butterfly population continues to decrease, many groups and individuals have committed themselves to boosting the Monarch butterfly population.

The unmistakable Monarch

Where the magic takes place

When one notices a Monarch butterfly fluttering about in North York, there is a good chance that the butterfly began his delicate life under the watchful and gentle care of residents at Delmanor Northtown.  Countless hours of devotion have been given by Tracy, Delmanor Northown team member, as she searches fields for small eggs and milkweed.  The milkweed is the only plant where a Monarch butterfly will lay its eggs and also the only plant that a Monarch butterfly will ingest.
Due to the destruction of natural habitats and heavy pesticide use, the milkweed is becoming less available resulting in the catastrophic decrease in Monarch butterfly population.

The reward

Delmanor Northtown residents and staff created a safe environment for the Monarch eggs to make their transition from caterpillar, to chrysalis and then to butterfly.  It is hoped that through education about the many destructive effects of habitat loss and pesticide use, the devoted individuals like Tracy, throughout North America will see a return of our beloved Monarch.

With the assistance and care from residents at Delmanor Northtown, the adult butterflies are then released on the beautiful terrace to start their magnificent journey to Southern California or Mexico.

Puppies "Invade" Delamanor Glen Abbey!

Delmanor Glen Abbey recently welcomed 6 West Highland Terrier Puppies for the afternoon as part of their Pet Therapy Program.

The advantages of pet therapy have been associated with emotional, physical, social and mental health benefits for seniors.  Studies have shown that seniors' overall health improves from having a pet, but even something as simple as petting a dog can result in an increased level of serotonin for both the human and the pet.  Dogs are not called man's best friend for nothing!

The puppies were between the ages of 6-7 weeks old and were widely popular with the seniors.  This visit with the puppies was the "encore performance" at Delmanor Glen Abbey, since they made their debut at just 3 weeks old.

The opportunity to hold, play and snuggle with the Westie Puppies was a highlight of the day for the Glen Abbey seniors and staff who are hoping that the puppies make a quick return prior to moving onto forever homes with a new family from the Oakville area.

Steps to LivingWell

Pole Walking (also known as Nordic Walking) isn’t new – it’s just relatively new to North America. So it is understandable that it is still seen as a mystery to many, why anyone would want to walk around with a pair of poles (resembling ski poles) in their hands, without skis strapped to their feet or snow on the ground.
Pole Walking can be enjoyed by everyone from the casual walker to the more serious, athletic walker. It is popular amongst 55 to 75 year olds (with a large amount of happy, healthy 75 to 98 olds as well). The reason for this is that most people in this age category already love to walk. They walk socially, for fun or for exercise, so adding Poles simply makes sense. Pole Walking makes walking more beneficial (increasing cardio and calorie burn) and it actually takes less effort to do and is easier on the body; lessening the impact when hitting the ground – on your back, hip, knee, ankle and/or feet.  It’s not surprising they are excited & can’t wait to get going.

Walking with Poles gives you a wonderfully tall feeling - naturally aligning your spine & strengthening your core while engaging more muscles than if you were walking without Poles.

People often perceive this professional athletic cross-training exercise as an activity for older or injured people. It’s unfortunate for those who don’t realize the health benefits. Way to go” for those smart, open minded, older adults who are willing to give it a try! Walk – on everyone!

Exquisite Art Show at Delmanor Northtown

To be exposed to an exhibit showcasing the works of some exceedingly talented artists in the North York area, the residents of Delmanor Northtown only had to go as far as their Delmanor Northtown lounge.

There are many Delmanor Northtown residents that have a passion for art; many of who express themselves in various art disciplines.  This very unique and specialized Art Show gave the Delmanor Seniors an opportunity to talk to other artists about their contemporary and traditional works.

The seniors that reside in any of the Delmanor Seniors Communities are given many ways to express their creativity, enhance their artistic skills and display and share their artistic creations.  This art exhibit was an excellent example of how residents are given unique opportunities to continue to grow their talents and passions throughout their retirement years.

Lawn Bowling with the Marketing Staff of Delmanor Prince Edward

As a thank you for the sponsorship and support from Delmanor Prince Edward, James Garden Lawn Bowling Club and the Etobicoke Lawn Bowling Club invited the Marketing Managers from Delmanor Prince Edward for private lawn bowling lessons from the club professionals.

Nikki, Julie and Karen had a wonderful time learning techniques and etiquette of lawn bowling.  The trio were given the opportunity to compare the differences between lawn bowling on artificial turf and  natural grass.

Everyone can not wait for the fun and exciting times ahead with the future seniors of Delmanor Prince Edward and the James Garden and Etobicoke Lawn Bowling Clubs.
