Steps to LivingWell

Snooze your way to a younger brain! You probably don't need a study to tell you that not getting enough sleep can make it hard to think clearly and remember things. But research does show that sleep deprivation can affect cognition, and since your sleep patterns change and your risk of sleep problems increase as you get older, not getting enough shut-eye can aggravate age-related cognitive decline.

Another side effect of sleep deprivation is its link to depression.  Unfortunately, older adults are more likely to experience both depression and sleep problems as they age.  While researchers aren't sure if depression leads to sleep problems or vice versa, they do acknowledge that it's easy to get swept into their joint cycle. Improving sleep or treating depression can benefit both conditions and lead to better brain function.

If health problems are interfering with your sleep, there are some easy ways to ensure a good night's rest. Try going to bed at a consistent time and to help you nod off, dim the lights an hour before bedtime and transition to quiet activities like reading a book. Take a hot shower or bath before bed; the natural drop in your body temperature afterward will help you fall asleep. Avoid drinking alcohol or consuming caffeine for 3 to 4 hours before bed. Close your eyes ….. quiet your mind .... take some slow deep breaths .... and enjoy sweet dreams!

Brought to you by your LivingWell Coaches.

Delmanor Northtown Celebrates Cinco de Mayo!

Cinco de Mayo, (Spanish for the fifth of May)  commemorates the Battle of Puebla in 1862, when a small, poorly equipped Mexican army defeated a much larger and powerful French Army.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become highly commercialized. Mexican heritage is celebrated with extravagance on May 5th with parades, parties and folk festivals throughout the country. Red, white and green, the colors of the Mexican flag, are festively displayed.  However, throughout most of Mexico, Cinco de Mayo goes surprisingly unnoticed. Only a few random celebrations occur throughout the country.

As in the United States, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated throughout Canada as a Mexican cultural festival. Parades, decorations, Mexican food and live music are commonly found on May 5th. Vancouver draws the largest crowds for the festivities in Canada; it hosts the biggest and most unusual Cinco de Mayo event every year at Abbotsford Skydive Centre, where a skydiving and air show are held to celebrate the holiday.

At Delmanor Northtown residents celebrated Cinco de Mayo in their own unique style.   The seniors enjoyed wonderful Spanish music and a dinner menu that incorporated many Mexican favorite foods and lively Mexican themed decorations.

It was surprising how many residents love Mexican food and delighted in sharing personal memories of their trips to Mexico in the past.

The Delmanor Experience, a Residents Perspective

No one can truly express what the “Delmanor Experience” is better than one of our residents. Kay celebrated a special birthday at Delmanor Elgin Mills and was so pleased with the meal and service that she took the time to share her experience with us. Here is just a few exerts from Kay’s letter to Delmanor Elgin Mills General Manager.

“I am writing to tell you what a wonderful staff you have here at Delmanor…..From the first arrangements with Barbara (Concierge), with input from Divakar, Ashley (Chefs), Massou (Dining Room Manager) and finally Dominic (Dining Room Server), everyone was so very helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. Dominic was a gem, efficient with such great personality. All involved were professional and made the day a very happy celebration for me.

Elgin Mills Resident, Kay Hodgins

I was absolutely delighted with the whole lunch and want to express my appreciation to everyone involved. My family and friends know that the main reason I moved to Delmanor was the food, and now they understand. Everyone was so complimentary about the food, service and overall cheerfulness and warmth they experienced. Please convey my sincere thanks to all involved.”

These are the standards to which Delmanor strives for day in and day out in every facet of the residence. The team effort put forward is truly what sets us apart in the retirement industry. Thank you Kay for sharing your birthday with us and taking the time to let us know how you enjoyed yourself!
