Delmanor Elgin Mills "Knit Wits" Presentation Event

The hard working seniors that make up the Delmanor Elgin Mills 'Knit Wits" have continued to knit scarves, mitts and hats this year in preparation for the cold winter months ahead.

The Richmond Hill Salvation Army organizes an annual winter coat drive where residents of Richmond Hill can donate gently used winter coats to those less fortunate in the community.

The 'Knit Wits" with some of their creations!
The hard work from the Delmanor Elgin Mills 'Knit Wits" resulted in cozy accessories to offer with the coats that are collected from the winter coat drive.  Everyone at Delmanor Elgin Mills were thrilled that they were donating 48 scarves, 9 hats, and 5 pairs of mitts to the drive.  Each and every donation is going to make a dramatic impact on the lives of those who are receiving the warm knitted items.  The "Knit Wits" will continue to work on items that will benefit others, they have already begun working on items for next winter!

Delmanor Northtown Welcomes Fall with a Dance!

Dancing is a wonderful activity that can be enjoyed in any season.  It is not restricted by age and provides wonderful exercise for everyone.

Many of the dancers that attended Delmanor Northtown's Fall Dance could describe, or show you first hand on the dance floor, the many positive effects that dancing through their retirement has had on their well being.

Since social dancing is not as popular in society as a whole as it once was, the residents and invited guests appreciate the dances held at Delmanor Northtown even more!  The retirement residence has become very well known with seniors in the local community for having delightful dances, and with each dance comes more anticipation for  the next one to come!

The Delmanor Northtown lounge boasts a large dance floor and was warmly decorated with fall colours.  There is always a live band playing tasteful, upbeat music, a fun & energetic atmosphere, along with a variety of delicious hors d'oeuvres at each of the Northtown dances.  There is something for everyone!

The live band plays a mixture of waltz, quickstep, salsa, tango, ballroom, or even those with an interest in a simple conga line could join in.  As with all Delmanor Northtown dances, all proceeds from this widely popular event goes to the "Delmanor Northtown Gives Back Initiative".

Celebrating Grandparents at Delmanor Glen Abbey

For some, it is hard to believe that Grandparents Day has been around since 1978.

For many, it is an unrecognized day, and the first Sunday after Labour Day passes by unnoticed like most other Sundays of the year.  However, the staff and residents at Delmanor Glen Abbey celebrated this day with music and festivities to honour the generational bond and pay tribute to Grandparents.

Mark Kersey entertained the large crowd with songs for all ages, along with acrobatic yo-yo tricks that delighted both grandchildren and grandparents alike.

After the wonderful performance, the festivities continued with the arrival of an ice cream truck for everyone to have a sweet treat.

The Delmanor Glen Abbey seniors could think of no better way for the generations to come together to enjoy this special day.

Ukulele Workshop at Delmanor Wynford!

The residents of Delmanor Wynford were treated to a very unique workshop involving the Ukulele.  The seniors met in the Delmanor Wynford Theatre for a session to gain insight into the instrument, as well as to experience introductory lessons.

Ken Jones, musician and ukulele aficionado, brought a fun and cheery repertoire to the retirement community.  Not only did the seniors enjoy listening and singing along to the familiar tunes, the recognizable songs made learning and strumming along that much more fun!

Steps to LivingWell

Seniors often suffer from multiple chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure, arthritis, and poor sleep. Yoga has long been shown to alleviate the symptoms of many such conditions, combining physical poses with relaxation and breathing techniques, to improve overall health and well-being.
The slow, gentle movements involved with yoga are excellent for helping older adults with limited mobility and it integrates movement and physical exercise into their lives. Unlike weight training, yoga is low-impact, easy on joints, and has a low risk for injury.
About one-half of all seniors report sleeping problems including insomnia and late-night wakefulness. Researchers have discovered that yoga actually helps people fall asleep more quickly and stay asleep throughout the night. Breathing and relaxation techniques that make up the backbone of yoga practice translates in to improved sleep quality.

Yoga can, in fact, be good for adults of all ages, especially seniors. Yoga can be extremely helpful when it comes to combating stress, fatigue and pain. Some yoga poses increase core strength and balance, which reduces the risk of fall-related injuries.
Yoga stretches the body, which can help seniors maintain good range of motion as they age and prevent against fails. In fact there is an old yogic saying that goes ‘the body is as young as the spine is flexible’. Food for thought!
