Delmanor Wynford Residents Take on Farm Life!

The residents of Delmanor Wynford brought new life to the retirement community with an inspiring project that brought much joy, contentment and pride to the seniors.  Delmanor Wynford constructed "Wynford Farm" through the usually dreary months of January and February.

Resident Mary Yule with her family and new chick
The farm began with an incubator and one dozen eggs from a local farm.  Residents were responsible for turning the eggs several times a day and monitoring the temperature of the incubator.  After 21 days, to the excitement of the devoted participants, the eggs began to hatch.  The 10 little bundles of fluff were welcomed to the world by the ecstatic residents, families, staff & guests.  After the chicks hatched, residents were responsible for feeding, watering and cleaning the chicks on a daily basis.  As the chicks left the newborn care of the Delmanor Wynford residents, they were returned to the farm where they will have more space in order to grow.  This heart warming project brought all of the seniors together during the cold winter months.

Delmanor Elgin Mills Supports Heart & Stroke "Fit for Heart"

On Sunday, February 13th, Delmanor Elgin Mills residents, volunteers, family members and Heart and Stroke Foundation staff gathered in the lobby of the retirement residence to kick off their fundraiser walk for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

The Heart & Stroke Walk-a-thon Group

There were 20 seniors taking part in the walk, and they were joined by family and friends. The participants were encouraged to walk around the entire first floor of the residence as many times as they could.  Two of the seniors completed 28 laps without stopping; this was a new record for participants in this event!  The walk-a-thon itself brought in over $800.00 with the possibility of much more from the raffles and 50/50 draws that will be going on until the end of February.  Organizers hope to raise $1,000 from the entire fundraising event.

The Par Three Trio

The hungry participants were rewarded with a brunch buffet and excellent entertainment provided by The Par 3 Trio to complete a perfect and memorable day!

Delmanor Elgin Mills Learns Chocolate Making

The residents of Delmanor Elgin Mills visited Afya Hort Therapy on February 1st to learn the exquisite art of making chocolate from scratch!

Resident Peggy Sarazin using her muscles to grind the cocoa

Afya Hort Therapy's Sean Chubbuck provided a slide show to the seniors that depicted the history of chocolate, along with visual samples to each of the attendees.  Chocolate begins as a cacao bean in the pod and then is turned into liqueur and then finally to cocoa butter.
The Delmanor Seniors were given the opportunity to grind the cocoa beans using a mortar and pestle and then experienced the modern version using a juicer to separate the liqueur from the husks.

After all of this hard work, the residents were rewarded with a mug of their very own hand made hot chocolate.

All of the seniors who attended this workshop had a wonderful time and learned a great deal about making chocolate!
