Delmanor Wynford Bids Farewell to Summer

It was with mixed emotions that the residents of Delmanor Wynford enjoyed the last few days of summer.  The seniors were sad to see summer go, but thoroughly enjoyed a very special send off to summer celebration that was held at Delmanor Wynford

To begin the party, residents enjoyed a delicious BBQ prepared by the talented Wynford Chefs.  The BBQ included a number of resident favourites such as corn on the cob, assorted salads, marinated steak, BBQ chicken, and delicious wine to compliment their meals.

The celebration continued after dinner with Mega-City Swing Band, an 18 piece big band, that dazzled late into the evening.  The talented band consisted of rhythm, bass and wood wind instruments.  The guests enjoyed songs from Glen Miller Orchestra, Frank Sinatra, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, and Tommy Dorsey.  Everyone at Delmanor Wynford were tapping their toes and singing along to the songs from days gone by.

Delmanor Glen Abbey Visits the West End Buddhist Centre

The residents of Delmanor Glen Abbey visited the Mississauga Buddhist Temple on Dixie Road.  Rev. Dr. Bhante extended a warm welcome to the seniors, some of whom were visiting him for the second time.

The vision of the West End Buddhist Centre is to build a network of support in the community that nourishes intellectual and spiritual growth while maintaining Buddhist traditions.  Their mission is to be a place "where friendships begin and never end: a new generation temple open to all".

Everyone enjoyed touring the temple and learning more about Buddhism, while being treated to a delightful lunch of Sri Lankan food.

Organic Gardening at Delmanor Glen Abbey

The ability to grow and consume the healthiest food possible is one of the primary benefits of organic gardening.  Nothing you can buy in a store can compare to the taste, nutrition and cleanliness of a garden grown vegetable.

The residents of Delmanor Glen Abbey know the many advantages of eating healthy, locally grown food.  Many residents have been accustomed to having their own garden all of their lives, so they were thrilled with the opportunity to have an organic garden right at home at Delmanor Glen Abbey.

Myrtle Tovell

Along with the benefits of eating healthy food, gardening is a wonderful hobby that is relaxing and therapeutic for many people throughout their lives and into their retirement years.  Glen Abbey resident Myrtle Tovell, along with other residents tended to the garden.  They were collectively able to grow 4lb tomatoes that were enjoyed by everyone at the retirement community.

It's sad to see the end of the summer growing season, but Myrtle and her fellow organic farmers are looking forward to spring when they can continue to grow fresh produce for the seniors to enjoy.

Steps to LivingWell

Have you ever felt dizzy, lightheaded, or as if the room were spinning around you? These can be very troublesome sensations. If the feeling happens often, it could be a sign of a balance problem. Balance problems are among the most common reasons that older adults seek help from a doctor. Good balance is important to help you get around, stay independent, and carry out daily activities.
Having good balance means being able to control and maintain your body's position, whether you are moving or remaining still. An integral sense of balance helps you:
walk without staggering

  • get up from a chair without falling
  • climb stairs without tripping
  • bend over without falling
As you get older, many people experience problems with their sense of balance. They feel dizzy or unsteady; as if they or their surroundings were in motion. Disturbances of the inner ear are a common cause.

The part of the inner ear responsible for balance is the labyrinth. To maintain your body's position, the labyrinth interacts with other systems in the body, such as the eyes, bones and joints.

There are many ways to treat balance disorders. Treatment varies depending on the cause. See your doctor if you are experiencing dizziness, vertigo, or other problems with your balance.
