Let's Play Bridge!

The game of bridge is exciting, challenging, frustrating, humbling, yet never boring.  There are more than 750 trillion possible hands in the game of bridge, so it is impossible to not see something new each time you play.

The seniors at Delmanor Wynford appreciate the many benefits of playing bridge.  Bridge is one of the best ways to maintain mental sharpness for a senior.  Regular bridge playing improves reasoning skills, along with long and short term memories.

The game of bridge is unique as it is one of the few games that stimulates both the left and right sides of the brain.  It improves such skills as communication, logic, math, memory, visualization and psychology.  A game of bridge has also been found to boost the immune system.  By stimulating the brain cortex, bridge playing activity produces higher numbers of white blood cells that fight disease.  Studies have shown a direct connection between playing bridge and reducing the likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease.

The tournament held at Delmanor Wynford consisted of 5 tables of residents and 1 guest. During the afternoon, a delicious strawberry shortcake was served to all of the bridge players along with a choice of iced tea, iced coffee, strawberry infused filtered water or refreshing lemonade.  The top four prize winning players in order of scores for the afternoon were; Bunty, Anne, Martha and Joyce.  Congratulations to the winners and everyone for taking part in this fun event.

The Strawberry Shortcake Dessert
The Delmanor residents appreciate playing bridge regularly.  They enjoy the social benefits of bridge, for playing it involves communication and co operation with a partner and interaction with opponents -along with a healthy dose of competitive fun!  There is a special camaraderie among bridge players that develops from the social setting and the emphasis on teamwork, ethics and sportsmanship that comes from playing the game.

Everyone had a wonderful time during this afternoon of bridge.  The residents of Delmanor Wynford will definitely continue regular bridge matches both in these more structured events as well as casually among friends.

Delmanor Northtown Celebrates the New 90!

CBC/The National Correspondent Kelly Crowe came to Delmanor Northtown to interview resident Betty Convery for a special report on aging well.  The report is in light of recent Danish research that shows that people are not only living longer, but they are living better!

For many seniors, daily chores  require more and more time and eventually become overwhelming or impossible due to medical conditions and limitations.   So it comes as no surprise that we are seeing more and more seniors making the decision to move to retirement communities to help alleviate unneeded and unwanted stress. Not only are they relieving stress by making this decision, they are also adding years on to their life.

Studies are telling us that seniors that choose to move into retirement communities are living longer because of the interaction and socialization with other residents. They are also relieved of daily chores such as preparing meals, shopping and medical appointments that are often handled by a resident physician in retirement communities.

It is becoming common knowledge that those who have regular contact with others generally live happier and longer lives than those who do not. Not only does staying involved with other people help prevent loneliness & depression, it also keeps their minds active and alert. While we know that staying active and alert is necessary for seniors, we are also now seeing a direct correlation with seniors living longer because of it.

Canada will be launching their own study involving 50,000 Canadians by collecting  functional and cognitive data from participants 45 years of age and older.  Delmanor Northtown resident Betty Convery is an excellent example of "The New 90" and how having a healthy lifestyle can contribute to living into "The Fourth Age".

Steps to LivingWell

A health checklist should be a part of any travel plans.  If you have a health condition that requires medication or special assistance, you can plan an enjoyable trip that will accommodate your needs.  Start by planning the duration of the holiday in conjunction with the suggestions of your doctor and check that the destination location has suitable medical facilities, just in case.

Prior to traveling, consider making photocopies of your current prescriptions and keep one copy safely back home with a family member and another copy with your travel documents. In case your medications are lost, a local health care provider will be able to more easily help issue new medications.

Ensure that you have travel insurance.  As you mature, your likelihood of requiring medical attention grows, and seeking such attention can be costly. Reduce Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), a condition that causes a blood clot (generally in the legs), by walking around every 45 minutes, raising your legs and drinking plenty of water.

Travel stress is very real. It can affect you before, during or after your trip. Remember to eat healthy meals, stay hydrated, rest and practice quick breathing relaxation techniques to push stress away.

Enjoy your vacation. Age should not restrict you from travelling, as long as you plan accordingly. Remember to pack your smile; it’s the most important thing you can bring along on any holiday.

Brought to you by your LivingWell Coaches.
