Delmanor Prince Edward's Irish Dance Celebration!

Residents and Guests of Delmanor Prince Edward celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with an authentic Celtic lunch. During the afternoon, they were entertained by  traditional Irish dancing performed by students from Johnson Irish Dance School.

The Irish step-dance is a style of performance dance with its roots in traditional Irish culture. It is generally characterized by a stiff upper body and the quick and precise movements of the feet. It can be performed solo or in groups.

The costumes worn by the Irish dancers commemorated the clothing of the past. Dresses were based on the Irish peasant dress worn over two hundred years ago.  All of the Prince Edward residents loved the energy and enthusiasm of the dancers and their wonderful dance production.

Bollywood Dancers Visit Delmanor Prince Edward!

Being a part of a community so rich and diverse in culture, Delmanor Prince Edward chose to celebrate Indian culture for a day; one of the many present in our communities today.

On a recent afternoon, Diva Diverse put on a spectacular show for Residents and team members that was truly unforgettable! The performers dressed in bright, beautiful colours, and in outfits that stayed true to the Indian culture and Bollywood entertainment we see today. As they danced various styles of Indian dance including Bhangra, Kathak, and many more, residents were able to join in and learn different moves that were specific to those styles. The Old Mill Pub was filled with energy and decorations that afternoon, but the celebration did not stop there!

In the evening, residents enjoyed traditional Indian cuisine prepared by Prince Edward’s Culinary Team. The menu included tomato shorba, vegetable samosa served with mint chutney, chicken curry shrimp korma with biryani rice, raita and naan bread, and for dessert, gulab jamun with vanilla ice cream.  Everyone had a wonderful time celebrating Indian culture and food!

The Delmanor Northtown Egg Colouring Event!

The tradition of colouring eggs spans over centuries and has become a widely celebrated Easter custom in many parts of the world.

Families gather together on Holy Thursday to decorate a beautiful basket of colorful eggs; a reminder of Jesus’ resurrection and the new life on Easter Sunday.   In the Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches, Easter eggs are dyed red to represent the blood of Christ, shed on the Cross, and the hard shell of the egg symbolized the sealed Tomb of Christ — the cracking of which symbolized his resurrection from the dead.

At Delmanor Northtown, the community gathered together to celebrate Easter by creating their very own Pysanka. A Pysanka is a Ukrainian Easter egg, decorated using a wax-resist (batik) method and vibrant colours, all with a deep-rooted meaning.  The Northtown residents were amazed at the beauty of creating these colourful eggs and enjoyed learning about all of the traditions and customs that are celebrated around the world.

Easter is a time of renewal, a time of celebrating the gift of life, and the arrival of Spring. Delmanor Northtown felt very blessed to have had this opportunity to celebrate the Easter holiday as a community.

Maple Magic with Delmanor Glen Abbey!

In today's age of high tech electronics, it is important for everyone to nurture their spirits with pleasures & past times from days gone by.

The time honored Canadian tradition of extracting maple syrup was demonstrated at Delmanor Glen Abbey during a visit by Sean Chubbuck, who brought his own exaction equipment, and even a part of a tree!

Tools of the trade untouched by time showed how the most basic tradition can produce the beloved results that we all enjoy today.  The residents of Delmanor Glen Abbey were delighted to have an experience in their own homes that is normally reserved for those that are out in the wilderness.

After the demonstration, a prepared quantity of maple syrup was boiled and then poured over crushed snow to create the most deliciously sticky maple candy, with a quality far surpassing anything found in a store.  The Delmanor GlenAbbey residents had a truly gourmet experience!

Bringing the seniors of Delmanor Glen Abbey together to share traditions does a great deal to foster feelings of home and community.  By sharing in the project and experience, and appreciating Canadian roots, bonds were formed that will be sure to last long after the delicious smell of maple syrup has disappeared from the hallways of Delmanor Glen Abbey.  Even residents that are relatively new to Canada felt a stronger connection to our great country, and appreciated the opportunity to experience a tradition that was developed by early settlers many years ago.

King Cake Creations at Delmanor Wynford

The long standing tradition of the King Cake was celebrated at Delmanor Wynford, as Mardi Gras season came to a close.

King Cake is traditionally adorned in purple for justice, green for faith and gold for power.  A sweet yeast cake, the King Cake is filled with cinnamon, cream cheese, occasionally pecans, but always with a little plastic baby tucked inside!  The baby signifies good luck – so of course everyone wants to find the baby in their piece of cake!  The Delmanor Decorators decided to place many babies in the cake, to ensure that everyone at Wynford has great luck, health and prosperity for the coming year!

Decorating the cake was the most fun – residents all pitched in to strategically place babies and shower the cake with sprinkles.   After distributing the Mardi Gras beads, the residents learned about the history of the beads, how they are tossed from the parade floats, and how the goal is to collect as many beads as possible!

Residents at Delmanor Wynford always enjoy learning something new and having a good laugh – the King Cake provided both for the residents, and they look forward to doing it again next year!

Steps to LivingWell

Unfortunately people tend to replace this with fat weight. Also, not surprisingly, research shows that with loss of muscle comes loss of strength, which may prevent you from doing some of the activities you enjoy.  Attempting to shed weight through diet can also trigger a further loss of muscle.  Adding exercise to the equation however, can set you up for success.  The only way to reverse muscle decline is to build muscle through exercise and strength training.  The good news is that you can usually see results pretty quickly.
A strength training program should include exercises for all major muscle groups.  In general, start with light weights that allow you to perform an exercise with good form (you can maintain the proper body position and control the weight) at least 8 times in a row.  If you can’t, switch to a lighter weight. Varying the exercises that you do also keeps your muscles from getting used to the familiar movements, and ensures that you’ll continue seeing results from your efforts. Balance and strengthening exercises; particularly for your core abdominal muscles and lower body, are key to preventing falls. Keeping these muscle groups strong will give you more control over your body, train balance and improve your coordination.

Casino Night at Delmanor Elgin Mills!

Delmanor Elgin Mills residents beat those winter blues by bringing sunny Las Vegas into their home!

Residents were treated to a Crown and Anchor table, a Poker table and a Blackjack table, with professional dealers to bring the whole Vegas vibe to life.  Residents and team members were given the same amount of chips to start with, then they could do as they pleased to compete in order to win the grand prize for most chips won!

Even those who had never gambled before got in the spirit and gambled the night away.  The Grand Prize winner, Ken, came away with 220 chips, with second place going to the gentleman with only 30 chips.  Everyone was able to mingle with their cocktails, chat with friends and feel the thrill of winning! What a great way to beat those winter blues!

Exotic Animal Experience at Delmanor Glen Abbey!

Animals have a way of connecting with us that lift our spirits and heals our souls. The chance to meet and greet exotic animals gave the residents of Delmanor Glen Abbey an experience that will not be forgotten. Hands On Exotics visited the residence with birds, marsupials, and a very playful 20lb lynx kitten that romped like a giant house cat. New animals that residents never knew existed even made appearances, such as the ‘silk chicken’, which looked like something from a Dr. Seuss book. Its delicate feathers tickled fingers and the spiny ridges of the hedgehog showed how something so cute can also be so prickly.

Expanding our horizons is something we should all do regularly, and taking a hands on approach is a fantastic way to involve all of our senses. Doing so in a shared experience with friends is also a great way to form bonds, relish friendships, and make new ones as well. Talk of the animal friends resonated through the halls of Delmanor Glen Abbey for days after, ensuring that the fond memories will always be treasured.

The animal handlers from Hands On Exotics also gave the Glen Abbey residents some insight about animal habitats, their natural environments, and even their diet to provide an appreciation of how different their homelands are from our own. The Sugar Glider came from as far as Australia, and onlookers  were thrilled to have such an adorable native of the continent visit their home.

Laughs were had at the end of the presentation, when the audience was presented with an over sized cardboard box to test the universal feline love of boxes.  The audience watched as a baby wildcat turn into a purring ball of mischief that wanted nothing but playful attention. The residents realized that all animals need proper stimulation to bring out their warmth, fun, and affection, and they look forward to having Hands on Exotics visit Delmanor Glen Abbey again soon.
