Delmanor Northtown Celebrates the New 90!

CBC/The National Correspondent Kelly Crowe came to Delmanor Northtown to interview resident Betty Convery for a special report on aging well.  The report is in light of recent Danish research that shows that people are not only living longer, but they are living better!

For many seniors, daily chores  require more and more time and eventually become overwhelming or impossible due to medical conditions and limitations.   So it comes as no surprise that we are seeing more and more seniors making the decision to move to retirement communities to help alleviate unneeded and unwanted stress. Not only are they relieving stress by making this decision, they are also adding years on to their life.

Studies are telling us that seniors that choose to move into retirement communities are living longer because of the interaction and socialization with other residents. They are also relieved of daily chores such as preparing meals, shopping and medical appointments that are often handled by a resident physician in retirement communities.

It is becoming common knowledge that those who have regular contact with others generally live happier and longer lives than those who do not. Not only does staying involved with other people help prevent loneliness & depression, it also keeps their minds active and alert. While we know that staying active and alert is necessary for seniors, we are also now seeing a direct correlation with seniors living longer because of it.

Canada will be launching their own study involving 50,000 Canadians by collecting  functional and cognitive data from participants 45 years of age and older.  Delmanor Northtown resident Betty Convery is an excellent example of "The New 90" and how having a healthy lifestyle can contribute to living into "The Fourth Age".
