presentation that captivated the audience.
"Willie" McKnight's Hurricane Mk I |
Residents were treated to
visual and audio clips of Willie McKnight during his brief but impressive career as a pilot in the Second World War, the Battle of France and Battle of Britain.
Jeffrey's passion for aviation led him to create a very impressive ¼ scale model of the
Hawker Hurricane, McKnight's aircraft. With a working
propeller and lights, the detail and accuracy of his replica was
astounding! Residents lined up to
get a closer look of his fascinating model.
Delmanor Elgin Mills and WW2 veteran Rick were captivated by the model in the photo below, bringing back memories of his time in
the service. This presentation provided many
opportunities for residents to share their memories of war with the group and
to learn more about Canadian Pilot Willie McKnight and his contributions during the Second World War.
Willie McKnight died in 1941 at the age of 22. Although he has no known grave, his name is inscribed on the Runnymede Memorial Englefield Green in Surrey, UK. With the knowledge and passion from historians such as Jeffrey Tradburks, heroes of war like William McKnight will be remembered for generations to come.
