Delmanor Northtown Celebrates Oktoberfest!

Oktoberfest, the famous beer festival from Germany that traditionally starts in the third weekend of  September and ends the first Sunday of October. The festival originally began with the Royal Wedding on October  12th 1810. At Delmanor Northtown, the residents decided to continue the tradition of Oktoberfest with a true international flair!

On October 13th, community members gathered together to learn about and taste the wonderful beers of the world. The guests started out with the most famous German beer, Lรถwenbrau and then traveled to Japan for a glass of refreshing Sapporto. The beer tasting journey continued into Mexico with the well-loved Corona, then to Belgium with Stella Artois, a beer full of flavor and history!  Delmanor Northtown couldn’t host a beer tasting without a refreshing Heineken and then, last but not least, they returned to our beautiful country with a Molson Canadian and a Growers’ Apple Cider.

Delicious and traditional side dishes of Oktoberfest sausages, Sauerkraut, pickles and salty snacks were enjoyed by all residents of Delmanor Northtown as they sampled some of the greatest beers in the world. Everyone had a great time and by the time they were all finished, there wasn’t a single empty glass! So “prost” to Oktoberfest and cheers to life and living every day to the fullest at Delmanor Northtown!

The Delmanor Northtown All Candidates Meeting

With Election day approaching and in order to prepare for the October 19th  Federal Election, Delmanor Northtown held a party representative assembly in the Northtown lounge for an all-candidates meeting for the residents.

The Northtown residents had the opportunity to listen to each party's stand on current issues such as
Canada’s pension plan, pension splitting for seniors, taxing the middle class, the development of green projects, the vision of Canada in the years to come, transit, experienced leadership and changes to the health care system.

Before the vote, it was most helpful to have an opportunity to ask questions to understand the positions held by the Liberal, Conservative and NDP parties directly from the Willowdale representatives themselves.

One of the many advantages of living in a community such as Delmanor Northtown is for residents to have access to programs, lectures and events, such as the candidates meeting, which helped the residents to make an educated difference and make their votes count!

Delmanor Prince Edward Residents Attend a Jays Game!

Delmanor Prince Edward resident Blue Jays fans attended the recent sold out game of the Jays vs. the Yankees. The weather was perfect for the dome to be open throughout the evening for the players and fans to enjoy.

Although he is new to the majors, Delmanor Prince Edward resident Jays fans witnessed the way the Yankees player, Greg Bird, has developed a knack for hitting big home runs.  The rookie launched a three -run shot in the 10th inning which unfortunately led to the Yankees win over the Jays 6-4, moving them closer in the AL East race.

The Jays played a hard game.  The Delmanor Prince Edward residents in attendance were disappointed to see their home town lose, but happy to have been a part of this wonderful season of the Toronto Blue Jays!

The 'Who Dunnit Murder Mystery" Comes to Delmanor Elgin Mills!

There was a chill in the air and murder was afoot in Sin City!

Delmanor Elgin Mills Residents and Team members took on characters straight out of the 20s and 30s and hosted a murder mystery evening, taking place at a 'casino' in Las Vegas.  The mystery began weeks ago when all participants received their character descriptions and detailed backgrounds.  Next was a shopping spree so that each character was able to be dressed perfectly for their roles.  Guests included 'Ronald and Iguana Trump', 'Jack Black', 'Paul Piano' and 'Mimi Martini'.

The evening commenced with a cocktail featuring waitresses serving pink champagne to guests while wearing feather boas, and full attire from the roaring '20's.  Then a murder occurred and all team members and residents had to begin interrogating each other to find clues to uncover the murderer’s hidden identity.

The Elgin Mills Team!
The entire evening was full of laughs, accusations and bribery.  All residents in the audience were encouraged to take notes and then submit a secret ballot to guess “who dunnit”.  Bragging rights and a flashy certificate were awarded to those who investigated their way to the correct answer! The Delmanor Elgin Mills Team are already in the planning stages for the next murder mystery challenge as it was such a wonderful success for all!

Steps to LivingWell

When you retire you think you’ll pursue all sorts of new and exciting hobbies, but sometimes finding a hobby or two may not be that easy. Hobbies should have a mind body connection. Hobbies need not be expensive but they need to be fun and not too strenuous. In fact there are hundreds of hobbies out there just waiting for older adults to participate in.
Quality leisure time and physical activity promotes a healthier lifestyle.  Our bodies are meant to be active and to move.  Many people, especially as they age, tend to become inactive and sedentary preferring to watch television to help occupy their day.

In search of a healthy habit and an enjoyable hobby?  Why not try walking. Walking is a choice that is easily suited to almost any lifestyle. Walking is a hobby where you don’t have to learn a new skill, invest in a new wardrobe or purchase equipment. It’s free and you can walk anywhere. You can take a long walk or a short one; go alone, in pairs, or even join a walking club.
Getting involved in traditional hobbies such as cards and board games, can help to keep your mind alert and engaged. Whether you are playing bridge, scrabble or euchre, you have the added benefits of improving your social and emotional well-being.

Choosing a hobby shouldn't be to simply pass time; but rather choose a hobby that helps keeps you active and involved. Hobbies can and should be life enriching if they are well matched to the interests, abilities and desires of those pursuing them.

Delmanor Elgin Mills Visits R.O.M!

With all of the media coverage surrounding this wonderful exhibit, along with stories from friends & family members, the residents of Delmanor Elgin Mills were thrilled to have the opportunity to visit the Pompeii Exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum.

The residents were transported back in time to almost two thousand years ago when a volcano in Southern Italy - Mount Vesuvius, erupted with tremendous force and little warning.  Within 24 hours, the nearby city of Pompeii was buried under a rain of hot ash and falling debris, that then laid undiscovered for over 1600 years.

All of the residents that attended the R.O.M exhibit were fortunate that they had already visited Pompeii in person.  This in-depth display of artifacts and information added further to their previous knowledge and personal experiences.

The residents were captivated as they walked through the eruption simulations while learning about how life was for the citizens of Pompeii before the eruption, and of the absolute devastation that it caused.

As a fun addition to the display, residents were given the opportunity to dress up as Italian warriors and visit a traditional marketplace replica.  All of the Delmanor Elgin Mills residents that attended the R.O.M exhibit had a wonderful time learning about this historical event.

Delmanor Northtown's Fall Dance!

Delmanor Northtown has become the ideal spot for residents and invited guests to enjoy an evening of dancing.

At the Northtown Fall Dance, the resident dancers kept up with the professional dancers and took every step with style and grace. Whether up dancing or just toe tapping in their chair, everyone enjoyed listening to their favourite songs that were performed by the talented three piece band.

Dancing brings back fond memories of dances in past years for some; while others see it as a wonderful opportunity to keep up their skills and get excellent exercise by continuing to get out on the dance floor.

As the night progressed, even those fearful of stepping on a toe or two, couldn’t help but get up on the dance floor and really enjoy themselves!

The Delmanor Northtown residents and team are thrilled with how the Northtown dances keep growing in popularity, and are more fun each and every time!    For more information about the next Delmanor Northtown dance, please call Laurie or Keri at Delmanor Northtown (416) 225-9146 or online at delmanor.com

Toronto Mural & Art Show Comes to Delmanor Prince Edward!

Delmanor Prince Edward was transformed into a beautiful display of art history and artistic works for the residents and team members to enjoy!

"The Artist"
Guest speaker, Gary Hepworth, from Toronto's Village of Murals, came to Delmanor Prince Edward to share with the residents some of Toronto's most spectacular murals from the Islington Village and also to provide each artists story behind their creations.

As the day progressed, the excitement only grew as Nuit Blanche & Art Show came to life. Nuit Blanche, which can be literally translated to White Night in French, is an annual evening arts festival. A Nuit Blanche typically has museums with private and public art galleries, with the city itself being transformed into an art show, providing space for art installations, performances, and other activities.

"The Upside Down Table"

The halls at Prince Edward were filled with beautiful pieces of art provided by Arts Etobicoke, which were all created by local artisans. The LivingWell Centre was changed into a room of magnificent illusions and imagination. Every showpiece was inspired by the Prince Edward Team and showcased their individual creativity.

Some of the most memorable pieces of art included “The Upside Down Table”, “Remotely Static”, “The After Party”, “The Poncho Without A Man”, “The Artist”, and “Interrupted Girl..Or Not”. Of all these displays, the residents connected and truly enjoyed taking their photos within a blank frame for the art piece titled, “Just Me”.

Jean & Ginny
While residents explored the art exhibit, The Old Mill Pub provided an elegant retreat for residents to sit back and enjoy the sounds of smooth jazz with a glass of wine and the company of one another.

Both the presentation and Nuit Blanche were not only a day for the residents and team members of Prince Edward to enjoy art and creativity, but was also a day that brought laughter, and the opportunity to create new memories with great friends.
