Andreas, guest speaker and Audiologist spent 3 years at the prestigious National Centre for Audiology. He worked in a scientific setting, published acoustical research, and conducted clinical field trails on hearing aid technology and implementing policy change on how hearing aid performance is evaluated.

He and his team shared valuable information regarding types of hearing loss, and about the hearing system and its rehabilitation with the residents of Delmanor Northtown and invited guests.   One on one, residents could speak with a hearing specialist to learn about the latest technology.

Many people are not satisfied with their existing hearing aids or are recognizing that they are starting to have difficulties with their hearing.   For both, the Hearing Seminar was a welcomed opportunity to begin to improve the way they hear the world.

Meditation & Relaxation at Delmanor Glen Abbey

Medical mysteries are often shrouded in sciences that often make us feel as though we are at their mercy. History proves however that a person can take direct control of their own well-being to affect their physical health, their mental capacities, and spiritual growth. The practice of meditation has been a focus of ongoing attention at Delmanor Glen Abbey, and it has given the residents another order of control over their overall well-being.

Many cultures throughout the ages have turned to meditation to calm their inner voices.  The Delmanor residents were fortunate to have the help of a certified Hypnotist and Reiki Master to guide them through the process of calming their minds, relaxing their tensions, and finding an inner peace that is often difficult to attain. 

Through a step-by-step tour, the residents relaxed their bodies slowly with deliberate direction, placing them in tune with their pulses and their own natural methods of self-repair. Participants learned to watch themselves for signs of stress that otherwise might get ignored throughout the day, and provided tools and methods to take command over stress.

Being a shared experience, everyone who attended was guided back to full wakefulness and glances that implied the question of ‘did you feel that too?’ , that were traded when everyone realized that meditation can offer a much more refreshed feeling of control over our whole selves. The Glen Abbey residents realized that our natural levels of stress are something that we all attend to, and that exploring methods of conquering feelings of anxiety as well as feelings of powerlessness over health issues is always a worthwhile endeavor.

21st Annual RHAA Golf Tournament

On May 9^th a foursome from Delmanor participated in the 21^st Annual Ryerson Hospitality Alumni Association (RHAA) Golf Tournament at Cardinal Golf Club, in support of the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. The proceeds from the event support funding scholarships, awards and sponsoring events for those students working towards their degree in hospitality and tourism management.

One of the most active alumni associations on campus, the Ryerson Hospitality Alumni Association strives to connect past and current students of the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management Program through communication and experience. The RHAA is proud of their alumni’s achievements and aspirations as they strive to continuously help new students learn from alumni experiences from within the industry.

Sheldon Gould, Chief Operating Officer of Delmanor Retirement Communities, a proud alumnus of Ryerson’s school of Hospitality and Tourism Management was joined on the course by representatives from Delmanor Northtown (North York), Delmanor Wynford (North York), and Delmanor Elgin Mills (Richmond Hill) on what turned out to be an amazing day – with beautiful sun!!

 Although Delmanor was not the winning team, the proceeds went to an amazing program that has produced several current Delmanor Team Members. Delmanor would like to send a big “THANK-YOU” to Ryerson for their amazing contributions to this industry.  Delmanor is thrilled to sponsor such a wonderful and beneficial educational institution.

The Art of Tattooing at Delmanor Glen Abbey!

The art of tattooing has been around for centuries.  Ancient people began putting ink to skin in a way that was almost instinctual, one of few behavioral traits from ancient times that still exists today.

Civilizations all throughout history have used tattooing as a way to signify rank, and to display messages upon oneself.  The residents of Delmanor Glen Abbey were given an opportunity to learn about the interesting history of tattooing, their limitless meanings, current health and safety regulations that are used in North America, and even the opportunity to try a simulation using tools that are in practice today.

Canadian seniors today come from a rich and diverse history, with many life experiences and events that are often captured in tattoos.  Wars, loved family members, and historical happenings have been captured on the skin of some of the Delmanor Glen Abbey residents themselves.

The 'Tattoo Tryouts" gave the Delmanor Glen Abbey residents an opportunity to try the art from the other side of the canvas, and also those that may have been fearful of the art, an opportunity to experience tattooing first hand.  Conversations were sparked with those residents with tattoos as to their particular meanings, historical significance and timing of when they received their tattoos.

A simulation ended the gathering when a tattoo machine was reassembled with a ballpoint pen in the place of needles.  This demonstration allowed those that were interested a chance to operate the machines in a safe environment.  The buzzing and vibrations provoked many laughs, along with those who realized that their inhibitions were not only easily conquered, but fun!

The Joy of Hats, at Delmanor Northtown

There once was a time that everyone would not think of going out in public without wearing a hat! 

The Northtown Models

Norma, best known as "The Hat Lady", is an expert in vintage fashion. She has a personal collection of over 2500 hats! Norma and Jim came to Delmanor Northtown to share with residents and team members information about her wonderful hat collection; some traditional, some designed for Royalty, some very rare, some one of a kind, and some very high end designer hats from past decades.

Delmanor Northtown residents, team members, and guests, modeled their favorite hat or one from the collection, while Norma explained the history of each hat and when it would have been worn. 

Everyone agreed that an attractive hat can certainly be a real spirit booster!  For those who enjoy wearing hats they were delighted to learn that hats still play an important role in fashion today.

Appreciating the Northtown Volunteers with a Vintage Carnival!

April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month,  and there was no better time to thank and recognize the wonderful volunteers of Delmanor Northtown! They give so much to others and selflessly make personal sacrifices to improve the lives of others.  The Delmanor Northtown residents and team members wanted to give a heart felt THANK YOU for their dedication, their time and for sharing their talents to enrich the Northtown community!

On Friday, April 15^th Northtown's Newton Theatre was transformed into a Vintage Carnival, where red and white tents and colorful decorations took guests back to a simpler time. The room buzzed with excitement as the volunteers enjoyed candy treats, a whimsical photo booth, a delicious BBQ lunch and fun carnival games. All throughout the room, laughter and gratitude was felt, as many awestruck volunteers exclaimed: “ALL of this was planned for us!?”

Everyone at Delmanor Northtown are so very fortunate to have fantastic community volunteers who run a variety of recreational programs, upkeep the rooftop garden, organize the musical chorus and library books, chair committees and volunteer for a variety of special events. Their contributions help to make Northtown the vibrant community that it is!

All of the volunteers received a beautiful individualized “star” word cloud that included descriptions of their personalities and special traits, along with a gift and certificate of recognition from the MPs office. Everyone felt loved and inspired to continue the great work that they have been doing and continue giving their all to help others.

From all of us at Delmanor Northtown, thank you to our volunteers, as truly, you are our shining stars!

Blue Jays Fever at Delmanor Wynford!

It's an understatement to say that the residents of Delmanor Wynford are just Toronto Blue Jays Fans. Last season Delmanor Wynford took a bus load of excited residents to 2 games at the Rogers Centre, and followed them throughout the season to the playoffs. This year to start off the Blue Jays 40^th season, Duane Ward was invited to Delmanor Wynford to speak about his life as a MLB baseball player and a Toronto Blue Jay.

Duane Ward was first introduced to baseball in his hometown of Farmington, New Mexico. Duane was one of the most dependable relievers in baseball during his 10-year Major League career. He holds the Blue Jays single season saves record (45 in 1993) and is a two-time World Series Champion (1992 and 1993). Over his career, Duane recorded 670 strikeouts and 121 saves and was an American League All-Star in 1993. Duane currently lives with his family in Las Vegas, but spends a great deal of time in Toronto assisting with the Blue Jays Baseball Academy, and is passionate about giving back to youth baseball.

Residents from Delmanor’s four sister properties came to Wynford in their blue, white and Jays attire to greet Duane, and ask him various questions about his life, and the current Jays team. Duane Ward answered all the resident's questions, and then autographed memorabilia and took pictures with the excited attendees. He is a wonderful and inspirational person; everyone thoroughly enjoyed the stories and memories that Duane shared.

Duane Ward's visit hyped up the residents for the Home Game opener that evening, and for the 32 people that were going to the Rogers Centre the next day to cheer on the Blue Jays in their second home game.  Blue Jays fever is definitely strong at Delmanor Wynford, everyone is looking forward to another exciting year ahead!
