Steps to LivingWell

Eight out of 10 Canadians know that heart disease and stroke can be prevented, postponed or treated by making healthy lifestyle choices; but too often we focus on the barriers rather than the opportunities.
You can keep your heart healthy no matter how old you are, but it does take effort; possibly even changes in your everyday habits, such as eating a heart-healthy diet and increasing your activity level. Any kind of activity that raises your heart rate is good - dancing, cycling, bowling, table tennis to name a few; but walking is perhaps the most popular.  Walking is easy and inexpensive, and you can adjust your speed to your fitness level.  A simple way to determine if you are working hard enough is to perform the “talk test”. If your breathing is somewhat hard while you’re exercising but you can talk without gasping for air, you’re in the target zone.  Strength training also keeps blood vessels young and flexible while increasing blood flow. It can help your heart work more efficiently and reduce cardiovascular risk factors as well.

Enjoy and savour the flavour of healthy foods for your heart such as fruits and vegetables, nuts and whole grains while limiting saturated fats, salt, and foods containing cholesterol, like fatty meats.  A high-fibre diet will do double duty of filling you up and helping prevent inflammation of the arteries.
And of course we have chocolate!  Many health benefits of dark chocolate are based around its various ingredients to fight free radicals and minimize the effects of aging.  That’s one study to hang your hat on!

Delmanor Prince Edward's Chinese New Year Celebration!

Residents and Guests of Delmanor Prince Edward celebrated Chinese New Year by watching a traditional Chinese fan dance, a tradition that has been a part of China's heritage for over two thousand years! Considered to be an ancient form of folk dance, the Chinese Fan Dance is used to help pass down stories and traditions of Chinese culture to future generations.

The Chinese Fan Dancers at Delmanor Prince Edward entertained residents and guests by using fans as props and wearing complimenting brightly-colored costumes for an eye-catching spectacle of movement & artistic expression.

Most frequently paired with the Chinese New Year is the Dragon Dance. Chinese Dragons are a symbol of China as they are believed to bring good luck to people. The longer the dragon is in the dance, the more luck it is believed that it will bring to the community. The Residents of Delmanor Prince Edward enjoyed the flowing, majestic movements of the dragon dance.  The Chinese dragon dance, especially during New Year celebrations, is a symbol of the historical role that dragons have played demonstrating their power and dignity within Chinese culture.

Pancake Tuesday at the McConaghy Centre

Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Tuesday or Mardi Gras, is a day of celebration in many countries.  For some, it is honored by consuming pancakes,  for others who know it as Mardi Gras, it is known as the last day of eating in excess before the fasting period of Lent.

Although it is a Christian tradition, many cultures observe the ritual of Pancake Tuesday in their homes regardless of their religion.  The period of Lent, or foregoing unhealthy foods for 40 days, is an annual tradition that is observed by many Canadians.

The McConaghy Centre provided a delicious pancake breakfast for the local Richmond Hill seniors that included pancakes, sausage & bacon.  Delmanor Elgin Mills provided delicious fresh fruit, pastries and gift baskets to compliment the meal.

Everyone had a wonderful time with friends and neighbours, while enjoying delicious treats on Pancake Day.
