Celebrating Chinese New Year at Delmanor Elgin Mills

Also known as the 'Spring Festival" or Lunar New Year, the Chinese New Year is the longest running festival in the Chinese calendar, lasting 15 days plus Chinese New Years Eve.

Chinese New Year celebrations typically have people wearing red clothes, decorate with poems on red paper, and give children "lucky money" in red envelopes.  According to Chinese legend the colour red symbolizes fire, which is supposed to deflect bad luck.  As part of the celebrations at Delmanor Elgin Mills, the seniors were treated to sweets and were given lucky coins to help usher in wealth, happiness and good fortune.

In many Chinese New Year festivals, the highlight is the dragon dance.  The dragon which can stretch up to a hundred feet long in some cases is usually made of silk, paper and bambooAmidst paper lanterns, the residents and guests were treated to the captivating performance that included both the dragon and horse dances.
