Robbie Burns Celebrations at Delmanor Wynford

What better way to celebrate Scotland's favourite poet and lyricist, Robbie Burns, than with haggis, scotch, and highland dancers?  That's exactly the way Robbie Burns Day was celebrated at Delmanor Wynford!  Residents and staff dressed in their family tartans and enjoyed a lovely Scottish lunch and an afternoon filled with excitement!

The celebration began with residents, family members and friends gathering in the dining room.  Resident Min Yatabe recited 'The Selkirk Grace' which was followed by the "piping" of the haggis.  Residents stood and clapped as the haggis was walked through the dining room.  Resident Ben Cameron then recited the 'Address to a Haggis' and plunged his knife into the haggis for the ceremonial cutting.  A toast to the haggis was proposed and all residents and guests enjoyed a dram of Scotch.  A Scottish lunch was then served and included favourites such as cock-a-leekie soup, neeps, tatties, steak & kidney pie, haggis and shortbread.

The Burns celebration continued as residents enjoyed an afternoon of dancing with the McGrath Highland Dancers.  The dancers ranged in age from 6 to 16 and they performed a number of dances including the Highland Reel, the Scottish Sword dance, the Highland Fling, and many others.  Residents and guests had a wonderful time celebrating Robbie Burns' birthday and sharing stories about their Scottish heritage.

Billiards Workshop at Delmanor Glen Abbey

Billiards is one of the many activities that can be enjoyed by players of all ages.  Billiards for seniors offers an opportunity to rekindle old memories, build relationships and encourage friendly and fun competition.

Bruce Butler, Billiard Pro, came to Delmanor Glen Abbey to offer tips and tricks on the finer points of playing pool to encourage the seniors to continue to enjoy & improve their matches at the retirement residence.

There is already a dedicated group of Glen Abbey residents who really enjoy the time they spend together playing billiards.  Mr. Butler provided them with some new strategies that immediately were tested out in their game.  This hands-on workshop provided the residents with instructions and step by step advice as to how they could improve their technique.  After learning of a very experienced billiard player who is a member of the Glen Abbey staff, Bruce challenged her to a friendly match to have some fun!

Everyone that attended the workshop had a fantastic time learning new skills and are continuing to apply them to their daily matches of billiards.  Playing pool is just one of the many excellent activities taking place at Delmanor Seniors Communities to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle throughout retirement, even in the most frigid of winter weather!

Delmanor Visits Ripley's Aquarium!

Next to the CN Tower in downtown Toronto is the new Ripley's Aquarium of Canada.  It is the first and only aquatic facility of its kind in Ontario!  This extraordinary destination is quickly becoming one of the primary tourist destinations in Canada.

The Ripley's Aquarium of Canada works towards sustainability and conservation. The staff are committed to operating the aquarium with strict environmentally conscious practices and strive to educate guests to do the same.

The Delmanor Group
Two Delmanor Communities joined together for this exciting trip to Toronto's newest major attraction.  The seniors were in awe at the breathtaking underground exhibits and limitless things to see.  The aquarium was busy with families taking in the sights and experiences.  The Delmanor residents enjoyed listening to the children's reactions as they marveled over the fish and wildlife.

Some brave residents got on the fish scale to see how much money they
would  be sold for if they were caught!

The Aquarium is truly an unforgettable learning destination for visitors of all ages and one that will not be forgotten by the residents of Delmanor Elgin Mills and Delmanor Northtown!

Steps to LivingWell

Happy New Year, 2014 has officially arrived! Life is full of traditions, many handed down through the years, and some newly created between families and friends.  Either way, traditions are part of the colourful fabric that intertwine our lives and hold us together, transcending time and distance. This year, try something different.  When making your list of resolutions, think of ways to involve family members and friends as support.  Whether you live near or far, deciding to join forces and make New Year’s resolutions together increases the odds that you stay true to your goals.  Providing accountability for each other presents not only valuable reinforcement, but also offers the opportunity of staying in touch on a regular basis throughout the year.  By helping each other, you each gain a greater sense of purpose, which can be very meaningful in the life of a loved one.
The following is a list of resolutions which you may want to ponder.

·        Get your body moving by taking a walk everyday
·        Call a friend or relative as often as you can
·        Exercise your brain by taking an adult education class
·        Do one kind thing for someone else everyday
·        Do one good thing for yourself everyday
If you want to make a New Year resolution make one that ensures you live this year better than the last, and live life to the fullest possible and make your mark in your families.

Delmanor Wynford Winter Classic Lawn Bowling Tournament

Lawn bowling is an excellent sport for seniors since it isn't aerobic, but it requires flexibility and stamina to bend and stretch.  Lawn bowling requires the concentration and strategy of chess along with some of the characteristics of curling.

The Wintergreen Indoor Lawn Bowling club held the Delmanor Wynford Winter Classic Lawn Bowling Club with a full house of six teams.

The exciting day began at 9:15am with Monique Kuhn of Delmanor Wynford throwing the opening bowl.  The tournament format was two eight-end games in the morning, followed by two more eight- end games in the afternoon.  Players use only two bowls and the bowl closest to the jack wins the end.  Whoever achieves the most ends, wins the tournament!

Delmanor Elgin Mills Wraps Gifts for the Senior Wish Foundation

After a wonderful response and many generous donations from residents of Delmanor Elgin Mills and the Richmond Hill community at large, it was time to wrap up and send off all of the gifts that were received for the seniors at Elginwood Long Term Care Residence.

While everyone listened to Christmas carols and enjoyed fresh baked cookies, volunteers gathered to lovingly prepare packages for Christmas Day.  Amazed by the beautiful gifts of knit outerwear, cozy slippers, lavish bath products and much more, participants transformed Delmanor Elgin Mills into Santa's Workshop!

Special thanks to Ingrid Davis, York Region Representative of the Senior Wish Association for her tireless efforts in the name of charity and goodwill.  Delmanor Elgin Mills was honoured to be a part of the wonderful work done by the Association.
