Northtown Residents Attend a Decorative Fruit Carving Demonstration

With the warmer weather upon us, seasonal fruit becomes more prevalent on the menu at Delmanor Northtown.

Chef Divakar about to start the carving

As a kick off to the summer season, Chef Divakar decided that it would be fun to give a demonstration all about the art of fruit carving.  In this demonstration, he showed the residents how to make melon rind into very realistic leaves, and made a show piece out of a watermelon.

The main flower appeared and the carving begins

The transformations made by Chef Divakar with pieces of fruit left the seniors amazed!

The residents thoroughly enjoyed learning the art of decorative fruit carving and were thrilled with the creations.

The delicate process of carving the second row of petals

Most of the on-lookers could not believe what they were seeing as Chef Divakar carved a multi-tiered flower image out of the layers of rind, and pink flesh out of the watermelon, one piece at a time.

The seniors were captivated as Chef added depth to the carvings image by cutting more and more melon away to present perfectly shaped flower petals in various shades of colour.

Mary & Isabelle look on as more petals take form

After the demonstration one resident was asked what the best part of the whole experience was and she replied, "well, it's gorgeous but I love that we still get to eat it later!"

Delmanor Wynford Celebrates Cinco de Mayo

Delmanor Wynford residents and staff dressed in their sombreros and bright Mexican colours to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

Recreation Manager Ashley Smith with members of band

Cinco de Mayo is celebrated annually on May 5th.  It is a celebration of the Mexican victory over the French in the battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862.  An underdog Mexican force, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza defeated the well trained forces of Napolean III's French army.  The victory symbolized Mexico's resistance to foreign occupation, it's patriotism and unity.
