Steps to LivingWell

If you’re looking for one simple diet adjustment to offset your naturally slowing metabolism as you get older, drinking more water could be your golden ticket. Research found that people who were regular water drinkers consumed an average of 193 fewer calories a day than people who didn’t drink any water.
Starting your meal with a glass of water can also help you eat less.  Think water is boring?  Add a twist of lemon or lime, or add fresh berries to a pitcher of water and keep it in the fridge to infuse it with calorie-free flavour.

You’ll need to sip other beverages selectively to avoid empty calories.  If you’re a fan of fruit juice, switch to 100 percent juice varieties that contain pulp to get a little fibre with no added sugar.  Since sugar promotes fat storage around your middle, making better choices may not only result in a lower number on the scale, but it may help reshape your figure and prevent or reverse the stereotypical middle-age spread.
As we age, the balance between our need for water and our thirst for water shifts.  In fact, the less water an older person drinks, the less thirsty they become, leaving them open to the risk of serious dehydration and other complications.

Adjust your beverage intake based on outside temperature, activity level and medical conditions.  Eating a diet of a variety of foods and drinking water regularly will help you stay healthy and hydrated.

Delmanor Northtown's 'Walk of Life'!

At Delmanor Northtown, residents and team members are dedicated to being involved in the community in which they live.  Residents feel a great sense of pride when participating in fundraising events that change lives.

With the support of their TRIDEL team, the Delmanor Northtown residents participated in the 2016 Walk of Life which supports the Cardiac Health Foundation. It all started with the Healthy Hearts Chef Challenge, in which the Delmanor Culinary Team won 1st place overall to create a healthy and delicious meal. Their next goal was to walk in the 2016 Walk of Life and complete the 5K successfully.  Since 1965,  The Walk of Life has raised $12.5 Million nationally for facilities, scholarships & research, patient & public awareness, professional education and medical equipment. Walking & exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation programs are widely recommended as part of the continuum of cardiovascular care and the reason why the National WALK OF LIFE campaign was started.

In the early hours of Saturday, May 28th, the Delmanor Northtown team got themselves ready for a walk that will change lives - -many lives - -including that of 11 year old Isabella Rizzo, who is also known as “The Heart Warrior”. Her mother Cathy walked alongside the Delmanor Team and enchanted everyone with the stories of how the Cardiac Health Foundation was saving lives every day. Lives of those we know; lives of those we will meet one day as they grow into adulthood, all thanks to the advances that have been made possible by the Walk of Life.

At the end of the 5K walk, team Delmanor was tired, but spirits were filled with gratitude; gratitude for the chance to give back, gratitude to meet amazing people like Cathy Rizzo, and gratitude that together, we can make a direct impact in other people’s lives. Way to Go Team Delmanor Northtown!

Pastoral Images Concert at Delmanor Elgin Mills

The Carolynne Davy Voice Studio recently came to Delmanor Elgin Mills to present their Pastoral Images Concert to residents and guests.

The wonderful evening of songs and duets featured soprano Beth Evans and bass-baritone Stephen Cockle.  The duo, with accompanist Carolynne Davy and guest clarinetist Jessica Tse, presented a wide range of music from Purcell, through Handel, Mozart and Schubert to Gilbert & Sullivan.

Evans & Cockle are dedicated amateur singers, both as soloists and choristers, and have been working on voice performance with Carolynne Davy for some years.

Delmanor Elgin Mills was very pleased to host this fundraising event, with the impressive $1,000 raised being donated to the Alzheimer Society.  It was a very successful evening, both in terms of the enjoyment that the Delmanor residents experienced, along with funds being raised for a very worthy cause.

Swansea Dog Show at Delmanor Prince Edward

The Swansea Dog Obedience Club (SDOC) is a not-for-profit volunteer club.  Members of the Club volunteer their time to promote responsible dog ownership through class instruction, seminars, obedience trials, agility competitions, and pet visitations to seniors’ residences.

The Residents of Delmanor Prince Edward were pleased to welcome the Swansea Dog Obedience Club members into their home for a fantastic show! With seven incredible dogs and their owners present that evening, the Residents were able to get an up-close and personal look at their amazingly unique characteristics and beautiful coats! Not only were they wonderful to watch as they performed a wide variety of tricks, but they were all so friendly and a joy to be around. Everyone in attendance was able to experience the unique bond that exists between people and their dogs.  The joy and happiness that the dogs brought to Delmanor Prince Edward was outstanding!
