Delmanor Glen Abbey & The Teddy Bear & Mitten Tree

Plush animals were selected with care and then gently placed on the tree, along with mittens and hats for less fortunate children in the community.

Delmanor Wynford Supporting Fit Seniors!

In the early hours of the morning, a savvy group of over 120 members convene under the dimmed lighting inside Eglinton Square Shopping Mall.  The devoted fitness enthusiasts avoid the perils of sidewalk snow and ice to complete their daily workout in the comfortable conditions of the mall, before any of the shoppers arrive.

The Eglinton Square Mall Walking Club members know that maintaining fitness is important at all ages.  Studies have shown that 2 1/2 hours of walking per week can cut the risk of cardiovascular disease by 50%!

Delmanor Wynford was on hand to support this group of walkers, providing pedometers, snacks, and water to the participants.  Delmanor Wynford looks forward to continuing to support this walking group in the years to come.

Steps to LivingWell

December is typically a busy month with social engagements, house guests, visiting, shopping and all the other “to-dos”, and can be stressful and overwhelming for many.  The holidays can bring additional stress from multiple travel plans, changes in routines and even seasonal depression.  Try these five helpful tips to minimize your stress.
1.     Set realistic goals: During the holiday season visiting family and friends is always on the list.  Make sure you schedule ample rest time throughout and allow for plenty of transportation time in between visits so there’s no rushing.

2.     Keep set schedules: You’re used to waking, eating and going to bed at a certain time, make sure to respect your schedules.  Staying up late and eating later can cause stress and be difficult to adjust to.

3.     Keep expenses to a minimum:  Travel, gifts and eating out at fancy restaurants can start to take their toll on the cheque book, so create a realistic budget and stick to it.

4.     Plan appropriately:  A six-hour shopping trip may not be the best idea, with lots of walking, crowds and long periods of standing.

5.     Keep friends and family around you:  Holidays can also bring sadness for many.  Be sure not to isolate yourself.

With some practical tips, you can minimize the stress that can accompany the holidays. You may even end up enjoying the holidays more than you thought you would.  Best wishes to you and your family for a happy and healthy holiday season.

Santa, Delmanor Elgin Mills and Another Fantastic Parade!

It's that special time of year again, when children and adults alike try to catch sight of the Jolly One himself as he rings in the holiday season.

Elinor aboard the bus
The Richmond Hill Santa Claus Parade is an annual event that everyone at Delmanor Elgin Mills looks forward to.  The annual entry to the parade allows the Elgin Mills seniors an opportunity to sit aboard the Delmanor bus and wave and send greetings to the community.  Residents recognized & waved to familiar faces along the parade route, while they sang Christmas carols and tossed out candy canes.  The Delmanor Elgin Mills seniors love spreading holiday cheer with their neighbours and friends, especially seeing all of the little faces that watched the parade with magic and wonderment in their eyes.

Delmanor Team Members
Although the weather was not as festive as it could have been, the rain held off just long enough for the Delmanor Elgin Mills residents and staff to walk from Elgin Mills to Major MacKenzie.

The Richmond Hill Santa Claus Parade always proves to be a lot of fun for everyone involved!  The annual event marks the official kickoff to the holiday season at Delmanor Elgin Mills.  All of the residents can't wait to dress up their home in anticipation of the festivities to come!

Downsizing Diva Karen Shin Presents..."Gifts that Jingle Your Bells!"

Members of the Central Eglinton Community Centre came to Delmanor Wynford for a gourmet lunch and very interesting presentation about the overabundance that tends to occur during the holidays.

From her years of experience helping seniors downsize and de-clutter their homes, Karen encouraged the guests to reflect on the gifts that have been the most cherished, as well as giving some thought to the meanings behind the gifts that they are planning to give over the upcoming holiday season.

Participants shared how they had accumulated large quantities of scented candles and lavender foot creams.  Karen explained how often times people hang on to items that they don't use out of a sense of guilt or obligation.  She discussed how gifts of experiences or gifts of time with loved ones are usually of the greatest value.

Karen during her presentation
In this busy time of year, attendees were invited to revisit their holiday gift lists and think of each person and their unique personalities with gift giving, instead of simply another item to check off of their list.

Everyone in attendance found the seminar very interesting and encouraging.  All of the guests were very appreciative of the wonderful lunch that was provided by the culinary team at Delmanor Wynford.

Delmanor Northtown Remembers........

On the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour at Delmanor Northtown, residents and staff came together in peace and solidarity to remember.

The seniors remember the devotion and sacrifices of more than 1.5 million Canadians who selflessly served our country.  The residents shared memories and stories of their own personal losses and experiences; of those who gave their lives, or had someone dear in their life that served and never returned home.

Henry & Dorothy

The Delmanor Northtown seniors were grateful for the ceremony where they could be among friends who share similar life experiences.  The Northtown Remembrance Day Ceremony provided an opportunity to honour the day for its unique significance to each and every resident.

Matt & Fred

Residents that served and had family that served

Each year, the Delmanor Northtown Ceremony is a very important tradition that the staff feel honoured to be a part of.  Every year, Delmanor Northtown residents and staff will continue to thank our veterans, and solute those that are currently serving.

Delmanor Northtown will always remember.

A Walk of Remembrance at Delmanor Glen Abbey

Remembering the sacrifices, the pain and the loved ones lost.   Delmanor Glen Abbey residents shared treasured war memorabilia through a devoted "Walk of Remembrance" table.

The Glen Abbey seniors and veterans shared photos, uniform pieces, books, medals and other meaningful items as a way to reflect, honour and reminisce.

To honour the Veterans at Delmanor Glen Abbey, the culinary team prepared a delicious lunch as a tribute and to say thank you.  The lunch provided a wonderful opportunity for the residents to share stories and memories.

The common thread between all of the seniors at Delmanor Glen Abbey is personal experience.  Whether they served in war personally or not, everyone felt the repercussions of war, either directly, through family and friends, or living through the time of war.  Having friends to share stories and experiences with further keeps the memories alive, and what a treasury of memories they are!

Following the Remembrance Lunch, the veterans gathered in front of the "Walk of Remembrance" table for a special photo opportunity.

On behalf of everyone at Delmanor Glen Abbey, we salute our veterans.

Delmanor Elgin Mills Wine Tasting Event!

Delmanor Elgin Mills residents gathered together to enjoy an evening of wine tasting.

Wine tasting expert Julian Hinter hosted the event that provided each of the seniors with two samples of white wine and two of red to practice their new techniques.

The Delmanor Seniors were instructed on tasting techniques and enoyed using their new skills throughout the evening.

Wonderful backgound music from an italian accordionist was played between wines, and while the residents arrived to the event.  The combination of classic italian music, with wine and dancing, made for a very enjoyable evening for everyone!

Delmanor Glen Abbey Residents are "Cyber Seniors"!

The residents of Delmanor Glen Abbey recently welcomed the students from St. Mildred's Lightbourn School for a afternoon of "cyber education".

As part of the "Grads Give Back" volunteer program at St. Mildred's, approximately 30 students helped the Glen Abbey seniors familiarize themselves and become comfortable with their ipads, laptops and the internet.

Whether it meant setting up an email account, viewing photos online, creating a facebook profile, or for the more advanced users, Skyping.  The residents were very appreciative for this one-on-one coaching that left a lasting impression on both the students and teachers alike.  The extraordinary people from St. Mildred's have been amazingly helpful and patient.  A very grateful thank you to all of the volunteers for their time and excellent knowledge!

The inspiration for the program was a documentary simply known as "Cyber Seniors"; an in-depth look at the way technology and the web can bring people together, regardless of age and level of experience.  The Toronto Star recently featured an article on the Cyber Seniors  program that can be viewed by clicking the following link.
